Plumeria in TX

Longview, TX(Zone 8a)

Does plumeria make it in Texas? I have a greenhouse that I could overwinter it in. I've been looking at the Plumeria forum and they sure are beautiful and so many to choose from! Yes, I need another flower to love like I need a hole in the head but I'm asking anyway!! =o)

oh yes, yes. you MUST have plumeria. put in garage or GH during winter then back out in late March/April

My husband does NOT thank you but I do!! Now to choose some cultivars....hmmmmm...this could get dangerous. Well actually, at nearly $50 a pop I think I better take it slow if I don't want to end up in divorce court!!

you don't need to drop $50 just yet. I'm hearing some walmarts have noids for $5. Also, you can post in the trading forum and trade for a rooted cutting. I think before you are totally in love with a type of plant, finds at Walmart, Home Depot, Lowes will give you a taste before developming a full fledged obsession. If you are so inclined, you can grow from seeds, but you won't see any plumie action for 1-2 years.

Thanks for letting me know. I'm going to the Dallas swap in October so I'll put the request out there. I'll have lots to trade for it. I have not seen them in our WalMart or Lowe's or our local nurseries. But maybe because I wasn't looking specifically for them. How long would it take for a cutting to grow into a tree? Are the fast or slow growers?

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

they grow fast. A rooted cutting may even bloom for you the same season, provided you are disciplined about fertilizing with something like Bloom booster (get at at HD/lowes). Good idea to trade for it, but do look at WM, etc. or you have the good fortune of getting a young plant with an inflorescence (flower).

the FAQ in the plumie forum is excellent. Also, my buddy Clare_CA is a walking encyclopedia. ask her anything!

greenie, I just noticed this past weekend that Lowe's got some in up here in dallas. I have also seen them at Calloway's this year.

Longview, TX(Zone 8a)

Unfortunately we don't have a Calloway's in Longview. Lots of things I miss about living in Frisco....Whole Foods, Central Market, the plethora of restaurants.... We do have WalMart and Lowe's and several good local nurseries though. I'll poke around. Thanks, guys!! Vossner, I'll check out the FAQ and holler at Clare_CA with all my questions. I"m sure she'll come to regret that you gave me her name! I got a great deal on the $45 book on Plumies through a friend of a DG'er. Got it for half price!! This is SUCH a great site but I think my hubster is starting to get a little annoyed at the amount of time I've been on it and a little afraid of all my new "wants/plans"!! =)

I am unfamiliar with the term "noid", also ignorant about plumeria other than I have been told they are beautiful & fragrant. Oddly enough, we were at W'mart in Nac Sunday and I always do a drive-by in the plants. Well they had a tray of pots with a stalk only. The label said plumeria. I was singularily unimpressed so didn't notice the price. Was that a "noid"?

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

I stole this term from the folks in the African Violet forum. It stands for No Identification. (noid). Just plumeria, as opposed to Plumeria "Scott Pratt" or "Paula's Pink", etc, etc.
Poster: yes, those were likely noids but perfectly fine as starter plants.

Greenie, no, she won't. She is that nice.

Voss, I"m assuming that last sentence was for me and not Podster. She has a LOT out on DG about plumies. That's very cool. I'll have to talk to her. Her instructions on planting from cuttings are definitely 101 which is great for someone who is new to them like me. Noids would be a great way to start until I get the hang of them and start getting pickier about what I want. I didn't know what noid meant either, thanks for the 411!!

I hate to admit I looked noid up in a dictionary before I showed my ignorance.

I looked all OVER this site. Forums, glossary, botanary files...you are not alone podster! That's why I love this site. I learn a TON!!
