Setaria palmifolia

Honea Path, SC

Anyone else growing this? I think the common name is variegated palm grass. I think it is zone 9 plant or higher but I always keep some cuttings in the Greenhouse over winter. It makes a wonderful border plant in a large bed or groundcover.

i really like that! it does sound like it would make a great ground cover. you should post the picture in plantfiles because i just went to look it up to purchase some, and there are no images available.

I grew this for years in my tropical beds, I'll try and dig up a picture. I grew both the variegated and the green type. Sadly mine didn't make it over the winter this year. If you ever want to trade for a piece of it let me know. Thanks-Kristi

Tampa, FL(Zone 10a)

I too am a fan of tropical variegated plants. And like Kristi would love a piece when it gets too big.

I had the non-variegated form in a pot for a few years and lost it.

Here's a link to Cottage Gardens that has the variegated palm grass you can order by calling them.

Michael, that's really nice looking. Do you have it in full sun up there? How big does it get in your area?

Shipping seemed very reasonable on this site. Never ordered from them, but sounds good.

BDunn, yes they are in full sun. They get about 3-4 ft. tall by the end of summer but I usually take at least a few cuttings into the GH for the winter.
