Polydamus Butterfly larvae

Fort Lauderdale, FL(Zone 10b)

With 3 matrue Aristolochia vines now dessimated, I'm sondering if they will recover from the wonderful inslaught by the many larvae this past couple of weeks!

The large seed pod of the Aristolochia Ringens vine. The Pipevine flower are 12" long. The Polydamus butterfly larvae have literally dessimated the 3 vines I have. I wonder if they will recoup?

So many larvae! Its no wonder I have few leaves left. Now what happens to the immature larvae if ther are no leaves left for them to feed on?

wonderful pics. If they don't eat the stems when they run out of leaves they may die. Sometimes if they are far enough along they will go ahead a pupate

Wow, those are neat pictures!! I have an Aristolochia Grandiflora, and have not had one cat yet!!

Piggypoo, it took quite a while for me to get any of the Polydames to notice they were welcome here. Aristolochia Ringens is the pipevine where all the photos came from. The flowers are 12" long. Two vines of A. Gibertii, the small pipevine flower have been denuded as well. All 3 vines are in the state of shock at present - from dense cover to being pretty well bare at present! Do hope all 3 of them recuperate quickly!

Lucky you bedouin! Do you bring any of the cats inside to pupate? Do you have a picture of the entire vine? I am wondering what it looks like and how big it is.

I just put out some seeds this morning, trying again to see if I can get my own Pipevine. I'll have to go find my seeds and see what kind it is.

No, l tend to leave all of the larvae to pupate on the vines. I find its easier as I don't have to continually go out to fetch fresh leaves and the survival rate is excellent.

Both the Aristolochia Ringens (the first picuture) and A. Gibertii are large vines and tend to wander quite a bit. I've confined these 2 pretty well, but another one I've left to roam somewhat! They are so badly denuded that I don't really worry too much as it's natures way of keeping them in check! (as long as the Polydames still keep feeding, that is)!

Thanks for the pics! It sure does look like they aren't going to let it overgrow. I was just realizing that you have Polydamus, not Pipevine Swallowtails.

I have never seen a Polydamus here and don't remember many people having them on the boards I've frequented. So, I wasn't even aware that they used the pipevine! I learned something new today.

Bedouin if you have any extra seeds of the Ringens and Gilbertii I would love to have some. Right now the only thing I have to trade is a few fresh picked A. fimbriata, Milkweed seed of the Red/Yellow flower and a few dark pink cleome seed. Have some yellow milkweed just about ready if I don't miss them again
