A solar pump would only be good for a true water garden with no fish. Plants take in O2 and release CO2, a pump creates O2 by moving water. By turning off the pump at night, you would kill your beneficial bacteria (if running with a filter), and your fish would be deprived of O2, they would smother.
If you were to use a pump like this, it would have to be in addition to other pumps that would be run 24/7.
Is there some reason why you can't run electricity where you want it? My DH has run elec. to every square inch of our yard.
We had the same problem. We put in a fish pond that is 60 x 300 feet and about 20 feet deep on one end and six feet deep on the shallow end. It is way too far from the house to run electric out there. We had a windmill areator put in. We live near the lake so we have lots of wind here. When the windmill turns it pumps air down into the bottom of the pond giving the fish more oxygen.
Here is a picture of our windmill. It works great and I think it looks neat too.

If you have a small pond do you need pumps and such or can it just be left alone? I want it for plants for now... and then maybe later we will expand...
gcfq....
I have solar pumps all over my small pond....I dont want to run electricity out there. Ebay has every kind you can imagine. I have some that have fountains and lights with a backup battery to run them at night if we're out on the deck at night....and some that run only when the sun is on them. I have those attached to spitters, that just trickle water back into the pond.
I have smaller water garden ponds with no water pump or filter, no water flow, no oxygen, no circulation at all....only plants and a couple of small fish. They do very well too (with nothing)
Thank you Merrymary....that helps so much because you are in the same area and deal with the same weather....by the way it's a wet one today....gotta plant some lilys a friend gave me.....got more than I need......hope to put pond in soon seeing as how we are not so dry anymore.....I'll let you know what happens....it'll be a small one not much to brag about but I hope it will be fun.....off to ebay to look and see what they have...start collecting.....my house has alluminum wiring and I don't want to add to it untill we convert...
Loon love the windmill but where I have in mind is too small and no wind would provide for it.....thank you though!....Robin
