This thing shot out from my banana beds are it's enormous. I did not plant it there. Bananas have been there for years. What the name of this EE? Also, to the right you will notice a yellowing banana. Do you think the EE might be stressing the nanner? I wonder if this crowding can be lethal to my bananas.
Need ID please
My guess is Xanthosoma sagittifolium (Malanga).
The Musa look stressed a bit.
The Malanga doesn't have much of a root system so they are probably not the problem.
Has it been unusually hot and dry?
If not try a heavy Potassium fert or add banana peels around the base.
Ric
Ric, thanks very much. that's what it is indeed. I am puzzled about my nana troubles. It's always unusually hot here, lol. I was inspecting the trunk and it looks sickly. we have had some rains, but it never has bother nanas before.
Do you winter them over in the ground or take them in?
I didn't purposed grow them. I guess I wasn't paying attention and it just started growing. since foliage is so pretty, I've just let it be. however, if I find out that I stresses my bananas I will remove it. Don't want anything bothering my bananas. that malanga just appeared there. I don't bring any of my tropicals in, except plumies and any baby tropicals. I've been fortunate enough that putting a tarp over them is enough protection.
I agree with Ric. Xanth.Sagit.
I have lots of them and some grow around my nanners. The only thing I have to be careful of it that her the Xanth.Sagit. will get about seven feet tall with massive people size leaves. Just have to make sure they dont overshadow the nannas and keep the nannas from getting adequate sun.
thanks everyone.
