I've been reading this forum daily for a few weeks now, and it is just simply amazing to have so much knowledge at your fingertips!
I initially purchased a brug (whiskers) from e-bay that's about 17" tall, but has yet to form the "Y." Has new leaves though and seems to have made it through the shipping pretty well.
Yesterday, I went to a little nursery, and low and behold, they had one brug left. Unfortunately, no blooms. However, it has 14 buds on it, and it looks like one is going to bloom soon, for the bud is opening at the end -- hopefully, this does mean that it is going to bloom soon!
The girl at the nursery said the blooms are white with red at the end of the bloom. Any clue what it could be? The nursery was so anxious to get rid of the brug that I got it for a steal! At least I think so. $23.00.
Anyway, here are some pictures of my new brug. Any comments are suggestions are more than welcome.
Thanks!
Another Brug Newbie :)
Welcome to the brug forum. What a nice, healthy looking brug. You are lucky to have found one so nice for that price, no matter what one it is. As for having red at the end of the bloom...probably not, but possibly a shade of pink or coral. It really won't matter because when you see the blooms and smell them in the evening, you will love it anyway. I hope you will post a picture or two when it opens some of the blooms. Thanks for joining us in the brug forum.
Shirley
Very nice! Please post pics when it blooms!!
Who is the beautiful baby that had to have his/ her picture taked too.
WELCOME Indiana_lily to Dave's and to the brug forum. Sounds like you are hooked already! LOL. I can't wait to see your new brug. It sounds incredible. I sure hope it is red rimmed!
It is amazing how brugs are in so many nurseries now. They really have become popular all over.
Thanks so much, everyone!
I was hooked the very first time I saw one several months ago! It was a frosty pink, I think. I eyed it for several weeks, then when I decided I'd pay whatever the cost to have it, it was gone. :(
I had no clue what they were even called. Then, I happened upon a website with a picture of one with a name, and well, there you have it!
They are not at all popular here. I actually called every nursery yesterday and found only one. Most nurseries had no clue what I was talking about! The one nursery that had it, had it sitting in a far back corner because no one wanted it. :(
I do hope it will have pink or coral blooms!! Red would be great too! I will definitely post pictures when it blooms. Not only does it have 14 "mature" buds, but it has a ton of tiny buds as well!
Heavinscent, my "baby" is a 13 year old Maine Coon named Taz, he's quite spoiled as you can tell by the picture.
Oh I meant to comment on your Taz in the first picture. He is a real beauty!!!
Do not forget to post a picture of you flowers!!
Welcome to Dave's seems like you are hooked for sure, like the rest of us.

Hi Lily and welcome from another hoosier
Hi! Welcome to this place!
(and hi everyone - I don't get in here often)
I'm excited to see a pic of these blooms! I didn't get to see my Whiskers bloom - but I heard they were yellow and also smell very very nice. I had to give mine to a neighbor when I moved and they have it at their business in the employee breakroom. They told me it has caught alot of interest and that the janitor likes it but hates it as well. (this one is very very perfumed).
I'll definitely take pictures when it blooms and post them!
I do have a question this morning though. When I looked out the window, I saw that a bud had fallen off. What causes this??? Not enough water? Too much water? Too much sun? I'd hate to have all the buds fall off before they even bloom!
Thanks!
Our weather has not been too good for our Brugs this year, too cool, and even though they like a lot of water we have had way too much, that could be why the bud fell of. I am sure once it realy heats up they will be fine.
Welcome....you are hooked!! Please post pictures when she blooms.
I guess I am hooked already!
I can't wait until Whiskers takes off!! Hopefully soon, it will form the "Y."
Ok, one more silly question, cause I'm a bit confused. I've read that the brugs like full sun, or sometimes part shade, and it likes to be protected from the wind. Right now, my brug is getting afternoon sun (from about 2:00 on) and is pretty well protected from the wind. Would it prefer morning sun and early afternoon sun instead (until about 1:00)?
I have it on my front porch, and it looks awesome from the street, but if it prefers morning to early afternoon sun, I can easily move it to my back patio and enjoy it there, but it won't be protected from the wind. It has been HOT and humid here. It's been around 90 all week, with thunderstorms in the afternoon.
Garden Guy, it was in a shaded area in an open building (if that makes any sense!). Other than that, it seems fine. No wilted leaves or anything.
Very nice plant indiana lily. I agree with GGK. It is most likely the change in environment that caused your Brug to drop it's bud.
I find that most of my Brugs prefer morning sun and afternoon shade.
With your temps around 90 I would try to protect it from the hot rays of the afternoon sun.
Snow - I found that my Brugs preferred the morning sun/afternoon shade as well because our summers get so hot and dry that too much of the afternoon sun makes them wilt - makes them look like they'd like to be able to run into the shade like we do.
My unknown brug bud started "emerging" this morning!! Oh, and "Hugo" (for lack of a better name at the moment) definitely did NOT like the front porch. Hugo is now between my house and the neighbor's house -- close to some morning glories.
