Westminster, CO(Zone 5a)

Hi everyone,

Thank you for the welcome! How very nice!

I ordered my AV's from Cedar Creek, and I cannot find my list now, drat.

I am so excited that I went out to my local nursery and purchased 2 mini's and a lovely

standard with a lighter green border on the edge of the dusky green leaves and a

very pretty light blue flower with a white ruffely edge.

One of the mini's has bright green leaves a a pink flower, looks like 4 petals. The other mini has verigated dusky foliage but has not flowered,

Shoot! I'm going to have to learn how to operate my digital camera with one hand. I should do that anyway.

Once again, Thank you for your welcomes, and I would love any babies you can spare, and I will send you pics and lists as soon as I can.

Thank you.

I have a question: I consume alot of Crystal Light beverages. The pitcher portions come in small plastic tubs. If I poke a hole or three in the bottom, do you all think I could use them for propagating a few leaves for gifts?

I'm sure I'll have lots more questions, so this is just a start.

Best fertilizer in anyones opinion?

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

DO you mean you will be putting soil-less mix into these containers then a leaf ? I'm not sure what they look like or the size. I like to use 3 oz. solo cups for rooting leaves best of all ! I put a hole in the bottom. Label name of leaf fill with soil-less very light mix. Add extra perlite if needed. Cut the leaf stem 1/2 inch or shorter. Stick straight into the middle of soil until leaf touches . Water thew real good. Put under light or window but not buring light. Keep evenly moist. Don't let dry out.
I like Eleanor's VF-11 fertilizer, Optimara's, Dyna-gro, Peter's African violet food.
Any fertilizer with-out Urea is god. But use less , weak. Less fertilizer is always best.

Westminster, CO(Zone 5a)

The little tubs are aprox 2" wide and 1" deep and basically clear.
Maybe the 3" solo's are the best way to go as you indicated. Just hate to throw plastic away without recycling, but wait may they can be recycled.

Also thank you for the fert. info.

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Oh you could use them with a hole in the if you like !

Missouri City, TX(Zone 9a)

Oldppepper- I know the tubs that you are referring to; they would be fine to use for putting down leaves, you could also use for small starter plants. I am the same way and my kids are always laughing at me. I use the green plastic laundry detergent scoops for fertilizer, leave one in potting soil bag, etc. I just think that it's wasteful! LOL

I looked at my pots and they say recycled on the bottom !

Westminster, CO(Zone 5a)

Okay, now I know I can use them (the small tubs). Thank you!

They are also labled #2 on the bottom so can recycle as well. Yippie!

Should have 6-7 pair of leaves arriving around Monday. Will let you all know what they are then, as I haven't found that dern list yet. Perhaps one of my mini dachs decided they looked tasty.

Silver Spring, MD

Sounds like you are off to a good start. Welcome!

Mansfield, TX(Zone 8a)

Welcome!! There are great people here :-)

Dillonvale, OH(Zone 6a)

Welcome to our friendly little home here oldpepper!

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Adding my WELCOME as well! Hope you'll soon be posting lots of photos of your new AVs and leaf babies!

Those little plastic containers are perfect for leaves & small plantlets.... I think the shallow depth is good, helps keep the mix from being too soggy when roots are still small. I've recently discovered that those 1/2 c. plastic cups that I get with applesauce in them (I substitute 1/2 c. unsweetened applesauce for 1/2 c. oil in almost every recipe involving a box of cake mix or brownie mix, so the prepackaged lunch portions are perfect), anyway, I've discovered that they fit perfectly into the coffee cups from my Grandma's china set! I poke a couple of drainage holes in the bottom with a metal kabob skewer that's been heated on my stove.

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

oldpepper did you buy special sets of leaves ! You will want to put each set in their own pot and label their name. If the leaf is big I would put only one Mom leaf in each tub alone.

Westminster, CO(Zone 5a)
