the demon worm struck

Jackson, SC(Zone 8a)

the hornworm struck my poor varigated baby. i took and rooted one off my varigated one i got last year and it was doing good then went outside a while ago and noticed no leaves and a very fat little hornworm. i threw him in the neighbors yard he can eat over there( hes got tomatoes).

gosh they have an bottomless stomach. i am so mad. getting the seven dust out tommorow.

dang things i love the moths but shoot the worms are demons when it comes to a plant.

Tulsa, OK(Zone 7a)

something here is now eating mine i have sprayed sprayed still more leaves ate every day.. tried 2 or 3 things now..one of the real problems with brugs..oh gosh he may not have no tomatoes..

Lizella, GA(Zone 8a)

Oh,,, NO TOMATOES... I also try to be kind (saw a praying mantis today).. I found a slug on bottom of a brug pot..nasty little boogers. he gets squashed along with those hateful japanese beetles.. white flies are a pain too. Elaine

Jackson, SC(Zone 8a)

shoot i know when a worn is near the plant looks good then a few hours later its almost bare. ugg makes me hot.

shoot i dont like slugs either. yechhh

praying mantis have a home here but havent seen any. probably to hot for them.

South West, LA(Zone 9a)

Hornworms nearly ate 2 Daturas to the ground and started in on my Brugies. I gave them to my Boys, poor critters I almost feel sorry for them.....OK NOT!!! White flys only seem to be on Creamsickle. I made short work of them today too. Squish squish splat splat Im so glad to be rid of that!! TEHE Im so strange =o) lol

Sorry to hear about that hungry cat munching your brug. I have seen many people here explaining how they devour a plant over night. I hope it recovers for you..

Jackson, SC(Zone 8a)

well this one devoured in a matter of hours due to the brug only had like 3 leaves. i dont know if they eat on the stalk or not but he was plucked off.

they are hungry little machines

I start having some problems with the cats in July. The moths are just now hatching out all over the place.
They are eyeing my Brug leaves for a spot to lay a Gazillion eggs!!!
Oh the thought of it horrifies me...

(Linda) Winfield, KS(Zone 6a)

I believe the horn worms only eats on the leaves. But that is bad enough, every morning I take the pugs out I check my plants over, and remove 1 or 2, I'm not a very nice person, whenever I remove one I step on it. I hate them things, I don't care what they turn into later, right now they are eating my Brug leaves, and they must die.

Missouri City, TX(Zone 9a)

2pugs I know that it isn't politically correct, but me too! Hate 'em, kill 'em.

Just wondering. This is my 1st attempt at growing brugs and daturas- daturas have been doing very well and I really like them; however seemed to be having some problems w/ my brugs. A few of them had very small spider like webs near the new growth- having never seen this before, don't know what it is but I don't think it can be good.
Any ideas?

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

They eat bark (on rare occasions) and they frequently eat buds too!

How could you not love such an adorable face? ROFL! I'm a hornworm lover and I admit that freely. I keep one non descript (don't care if they eat it to the ground) brug just for hornworms. Every hornworm I find gets transferred to this brug. .... I'm crazy yes! lol!

Doesn't it make you want to spit nails when you baby something all winter and then put it outside only to have it eaten up?
Sorry your Brug wound up Cat lunch Imzadi but the good news is that the leaves will grow right back.
April it sounds like you have spider mites. If you have a strong sprayer on your hose I'd blast them with water making sure to get the underside of the leaves where they live before they damage your new growth.
This will help get rid of them but they should also be treated with a Miticide spray.
If you don't have Avid they have other sprays that you can find in Wally World or your feed and seed store. Just make sure it says that it is for spider mites.

(Linda) Winfield, KS(Zone 6a)

Vee8ch, a hornworm lover, do you want me to ship all my hornworms I find on my plants to you. I will if you want them. I will put some brug leaves and a broken tomato vine in the package with the worms so they will have something to munch on and mail them to you. I will even pay a shipping charges myself. ROFLMBO.

Linda

Missouri City, TX(Zone 9a)

Snowhermit- I thought so, but having never seen them wasn't certain. I don't research bugs until I have them- don't want to jinx myself. Thanks.

Ok I don't know what your mother did to you as a child to make you turn out this way Vee8ch, but I urge you to get into therapy- oh my gosh after seeing that photo of you holding one I have to go take some more valium!

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

heehahahee!
Does this make you guys feel better?

Go toward to the light, go toward the light....

Im sorry the darn worm got your brug imzadi.

I have found spinosade works better for hornworms than anything else Iv'e tried seems to last longer than bt and isnt toxic as 7 dust just a suggestion

Turlock, CA(Zone 9a)

I only have two brugs, both in pots. The big 'Golden' is getting hit by spidermites, and the small variegated one is ratty from a small, green cat [baby hw?] The mites I'm still fighting but the cats are dead thanks to BT...I love the stuff.

Missouri City, TX(Zone 9a)

I am torn -not certain that I want to use BT or spinosade- I dislike cats so much you can't imagine, but I have several plants/trees that are hosts to cloudless sulpher butterfly- since they stay mainly on those specific plants I have tolerated them and the dang gulf coast fritterly (VERY ugly cat!) I am trying not to use anything specifically directed at cats- I am trying to be a politicaly correct gardner and pick the offenders off by hand- ok what I do is cut the branch, stem or limb they are connected to and put it in the trash. Don't know how much longer I can take it though.

(Linda) Winfield, KS(Zone 6a)

Just pick the worm off and step on it. Or you can throw it in the trash.

Missouri City, TX(Zone 9a)

2pugs that is amazingly disgusting of you to suggest! I cannot touch bugs- I don't know why but I know that I can't- I am not a complete baby or ninny- you'd be surprised worked for years in ICU w / all sorts of blood, guts, bacteria, wounds, oozing, pus, vomit, blood...etc and am fine w/ all that, but just can't deal w/ bugs- don't bait my own hook either.

(Mary) Poway, CA(Zone 10a)

I'm with you Aprilwillis. I worked for many years in ICU, Trauma unit and never lost my cool. Took off a green worm the other day and I thought ...Yuck!!!!!! I'm a Respiratory Therapist, and you know what we have to work with. LOL Doesn't stop me from removing the bugs, but it does gross me out inside. We just do what we have to do to save the Brug. LOL

(Linda) Winfield, KS(Zone 6a)

I use to just pick off the leaf that the worm was on until last year where I read on one form that they won't hurt you, so now I can pick it off with my fingers. It doesn't mean that I enjoy doing it by no means but I don't like seeing them on my plants either.

Linda

Missouri City, TX(Zone 9a)

I know they can't hurt you and I know that logically there is no reason for my inability to touch them. I know all that and even that I could immediately run into the house and wash my hands, but I just can't- I have to say that the anxiety it causes me is quite simillar to the anxiety I feel about heights- I have the phobia and it is just the most awful feeling. I do that cutting the leaf off thng, occassionally I have been known to cut them in half w/ my little clippers.

(Linda) Winfield, KS(Zone 6a)

I know what you are talking about I use to carry a pair of pliers with me to pull them off. But I quess in my old age I am getting a little more daring, or stupid, whichever. But I do like the part where you said "I have been known to cut them in half w/ my little clippers". I know where you are coming from about heights I am the same way about basements, when I get in one I start looking for a escape route. Just something about being closed in I quess.

Missouri City, TX(Zone 9a)

I was never afraid of heights until my adulthood and it is paralizing. I don't have the basement or confined spaces issues but I know that many people do and it must be awful because many times you cannot avoid those conditions. I do feel lucky that I am not afraid of being in high elevators (glass or otherwise) or in tall buildings, it is only when I am unprotected! Oh it is awful.

It took me a long time before I got the courage to cut the little buggers in half and I must say that I do feel some sick joy in it! And grasshoppers too!

(Linda) Winfield, KS(Zone 6a)

I agree on the grasshoppers I hate them as will, horn worms, grasshoppers and spiders oh yes snakes.

Summerville, SC(Zone 8a)

Hey Vee8ch, I have a cute little one for adoption. He's trained to sit up and beg! Just send me your address and I'll send him and all his friends 2nd day air!

When I find these guys on my brugs, I transfer them 2 one brug and let them have at it .. that way only 1 brug is molested and the others ok.

How cute X! LOL! Twins!
Send him my way and I'll take him to the beach. I've got a drawer full of tiny little swim trunks and lots of little flippers. (He would go crazy to see my female in her itty bitty bikini). Might even give him a short ride on a fishing hook! For sure an experience he'll never forget! ... hee!
I have so many hornworm pics from eggs, to newborn hatchlings, to different molts, to adults, and lots of worm butts too! You guys would really think I'm nuts. Hey!.... I was bored last summer , but what can I say? :) I learned so much about them and discovered they are actually really cool! Totally docile little critters.
I'm glad to know I'm not the only hornworm hugger ... ha! But I understand why some people would want to squish'em. It's discouraging to have your special brug chewed up.

Missouri City, TX(Zone 9a)

Ok Vee8ch, there is medication for available for your problem

Lizella, GA(Zone 8a)

ewwww, if those Japanese Beetles turned into anything sort of like a moth,, I wouldn't enjoy stomping their little er ...well, I am going to plant lots more 4 oclocks now that I know they will eat them and die..

Huntsville, AL(Zone 7a)

I can't believe I'm saying this, but ya know... that little bugger is.. well.. CUTE! I don't know if I could allow one to munch on my brugs, though. I take sinister pleasure in squishing any and all critters I find dining on my plants between my thumb and forefinger. Those guys, however, I'd have to transfer to the bird feeder trays..

Barb

Medford, NJ(Zone 6b)

Vee8ch I save them too so your not the only weird one. LOL

Missouri City, TX(Zone 9a)

EF what do you mean about the 4 o'clocks? I have them planted and love them, tell what benefit they are providing me!!!

Lizella, GA(Zone 8a)

April,,, just read on another thread,, hmm will have to check.. that if the jap. beetles eat on the 4 oclocks,, it poisons them so they die. will check,, Elaine

Lizella, GA(Zone 8a)

April,, finally found it. It was on the daylily thread.... Mystic (PF admin.) said if they eat the 4 oclocks, it kills them.

Missouri City, TX(Zone 9a)

EF very good! Wow pretty and deadly! what more could you ask? Thanks for the info!

April

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

Kristi is a hornworm hugger too?... Cool :)

This is a pic of a newborn "demon worm" :) It's hard to believe that just seconds earlier he fit into that teeny egg sack laying at his backend.
