New at Brugs

Hartselle, AL

I'm new to DG and new to starting Brugs. I have one that someone gave me last year and didn't think it was going to make it through the winter.....but here it is striving hard. It looks like the bugs like it too. I've been told to put "deadline" snail killer on it....to make a ring around the stem. Sounds like some good advice, but is there anything else I need to do? I don't have any idea what kind of brug this is and you may not be able to tell at this point, but if you know, please share with me. Any advice is appreciated.

WELCOME to Dave's and to brugs, Sheri! I bet you love it here. So many forums and so little time. LOL. I am always flitting here and there, finding plants I just have to have.

There are so many kinds of brugs, named and unnamed, sometimes you can't even tell which it is even when they are in flower. That being said, your leaves look velvety. I wonder if you have a double white there, a wild guess! LOL. The new leaves also are so nice and green. Looking good!

Just feed it a lot and keep watered and it will reward you.

The new growth is looking really great! Like Kell said, feed it and water it a lot. Any old slug/snail bait will work, but you don't really want to put it too close to the plant. The idea is to keep them away from the plant! Watch out for whiteflies too underneath the leaves and aphids. If you see ants on it, you probably have aphids .. any systemic insecticide will work.

Thanks guys.....I really appreciate your help. You're right, so far I have really enjoyed the DG site. There is a lot of really knowledgable people on here and I sure appreciate your help. I'll put some more pics on as it grows.

Hi Neighbor! Just wanted to say hello from over east of you a little. I'm on the south end of Huntsville. Mine are growing very nicely now and I'd be glad to share with you when they get large enough to do a bit of cutting on. Hope you stay on the forum here. These folks are wonderful and willing and able to help you with any questions you might have.
Nice to "meet" you!

Hey Barb, thanks, it is nice to meet you too. I work in Huntsville so I'm over that way most every day. I really appreciate your offer of the cuttings. I would love to have some if you have them to spare. Please keep me in mind. I plan to stay on here. I find it very interesting and informative on here and so many people seem to care and want to help out.

Do you have some pics of yours that you are growing? I would love to see them.

Hi again, Sheri. I wish I had some pics from this year, but I fried my digital by leaving it in the glove compartment my last trip down to FL. It was in the mid 90s outside, so no telling how hot it was in the car. Anyway, I have pics of a couple from last year, when I only had two - a pink and a yellow. I have a few more now, thanks to some very generous DGers here. I'm going to see if I can pick up one of those disposables so I can at least snap a memory or two. Here is the pink...

Edit cause I can't type...

Thanks for the posting, i'm a new brug'er too and have the same bitemarks and holes in my baby's leaves too.

i learned alot from the replies.

Good luck and if mine pulls through and blooms-- it's supposed to be a triple tangerine which i bought at the fairchild botanic garden down here in Miami-- we should exchange cuttings.

Jmf_sofla i live in lauderdale during the winter. What you will find more commonly than slugs that eat leaves where we are from are small green caterpillers. They love the new tender leaves. When you see holes in the middle of the leaves you can suspect slugs/snails but when its the new tender growth affected look really hard for tiny green caterpillars.
