Just got my first one a couple of days ago. I have read that they like lots of water, good draining soil, and lots of fertilizer. Any suggestions as to the brand of fertilizer? Will it bloom this year? It is about two feet tall. Can't wait to see it do its thing! What about winter care? I live in Kentucky.
New To Brugmansias
Welcome to the world of brugs, Rockdrky! I find brugs are so easy and do well with whatever fertilizer I use on them. I switch around all the time. In the ground I use the cheaper 16-16-16 and in pots I use the new Miracle Grow. But I also use fish emulsion and lots of other stuff. Early on I may use a higher nitrogen number to get them growing green and fast, and then I will switch to a more even one. I have read here to keep the phosphorous number lower. I try to get ones that have good minors included in it.
It could very well bloom this year. If it is a cutting from above the Y then I am sure it will. If it is from below the Y it may take a little longer. If it is a seedling you may have to wait till fall or early next summer. I find if you provide lots of room in their pot, and fertilize regularly, you have the best chance. Mine also flower much better with adequate sun. It will grow faster too in the ground.
Come late summer and early fall, lots of people will discuss the many ways they winter over their brugs, so you will be able to figure out then your best way.
GOOD LUCK with your new baby.
