Mulching Amaryllis belladonna in winter?

Bessemer City, NC(Zone 7b)

I have some container grown Amaryllis belladonna and I'd like to put them in the ground. Those of you who grow this one know that it will have foliage all winter.

I'm in 7b and have Lycoris radiata but don't mulch it and it's winter foliage does fine: a little nip here and there, but OK.

So, I read that the belladonnas need some mulch in zone 7 on down, and have read posted here that some DGers do that.

My question is: Do you cover the foliage to protect it or make a deep "collar" up around your plants?

I know it's early to think of winter mulch, but I'm planning ahead on placement.

I dont know about keeping foliage all winter, but I do know my Grandma in z4a tops has grown this for many years on the east side of her house without mulch, and I grow it here with no mulch at all and it always comes back without fail.
Wish I could help as far as how to keep the foliage all winter. I am anxious to see what everyone says.

Robert I have been told by an expert that these should be planted deeper if in very frosty areas, and bulbs will eventually find their own depth. This site will give you the info
