you did great, the red one is especially fab

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

The red one lured me within range and the others appeared along side it. I would never have even gone in that direction if it hadn't been for the red. I didn't need any more plants!!!!!!

It must have been the heat normally I would have talked myself out of getting them ...... Hibiscus & Brugs both attract insects. lol lol Good thing both like Bayer Rose 2n1.

ooh...I love the red one! Let me know if you find out the name, would love to find one of those for myself! Maybe I'll have to check at my Lowe's and see if they have those too (probably not!)

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

the orange one might be Orange Key. sure looks like the one I have. profuse bloomer

Belleville, IL(Zone 6b)

I never seen any hibiscus as curled as that one. It is beautiful. Now I am thinking of checking out Lowe's. Only problem I have is that the temps have been in the 90's and my car has no a/c. I may have to wait for the weekend to use the other car my husband uses for work. Sure hope they last that long if they are there.lol
I have a little nursery I go to next to the local feedmill and the prices are so cheap. I got a beautiful brug there last month. I never had a store bought one and the fragrance was enchanting. I couldn't get enough of it. I don't know if it will bloom again in all this heat or not.

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

I believe this was a recent delivery of plants. There weren't too many of the reds, so if you want one you might need to check out Lowe's right away.

Wendy, they open at 7 AM I believe so maybe an early morning run?? Wendy I heard today that Bonnie's Plants there in AL grew Brugs last year.

Listen to me I'm pushing Hibiscus.

Thanks for the compliments on the blooms, they're actually prettier in person.

I have to set my schedule to my dogs. LOL I have to put them out early to play so they are tired enough to sleep indoors while I am gone.
It would be nice to be able to get an early start for a change.
Our Lowe's has been having some good choices lately and so has Home Depot.
The last time I was there I didn't see any hibs, but I think they were getting ready for Mother's Day. Gee, if that is the case, I need to visit more often. LOL

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

Oh do I understand scheduling one's life around the dogs. lol lol lol Perhaps it's a little easier for me to sneak off because we're both retired so Big Bob will do the morning doggie chores while I run to town if I want. Getting away together however is difficult in extreme weather. A high of 90F predicted for today is extreme.

Ohhh! Love the peach one! I especially like the faint veining in it! Good choices!!

I have some of the red if someone wants cuttings. for Postage. you would have to wait if you want me to root them for you. D-mail me and I will make a deal with you maybe trade for another color. Fran

I went to our Lowe's and they only had the regular single petals. They had their hanging baskets on sale for only $1.00 so it was not a wasted trip. One had lobelia, and Perilla Magilla and looked beautiful. I great bargain. I also took one that looked totally ready for the trash because it had a lantana "Shrub" in it. I divided that one up and got some nice plants out of it and stuck thoses in the ground for the butterflies. Then I got a very bushy clemetis sitting alongside the others that were on sale and looked pitiful. And I got a six pack of lobelia that had maybe five left. But it was only 50 cents and they are doing well. So it wasn't a wasted trip.
When I went to Home Depot they had some tropical hibiscus so I got a small white with red throat one. It looks like a small flowering one, but they are pretty too.
And I had some accumulated points at a local nursery for $5 off and I bought a $12 blue river hardy hibiscus with that. I figured it would look nice in a moon garden setting I am planning.
I am still going to keep my eye out for those pretty ones you posted pictures of, though. You never know!
It is too hot to ship things here, or I would try to make a deal for a cutting.
I will have to pass on that.
The red one I bought several years ago is a three foot bush now and I take it inside the garage in the winter. I suppose this white one I bought will also grow into a tree shape.
The white one has a name, but I can't remember it off hand. It is one the tag. I am thinking Cool Wind possibly.

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

Wendy,

Too hot for sure!!! We're supposed to get hights of 92F and right now is only 82F but dang it's tough working out there. Been up and working since 5 AM to bet the heat. We just bathed 6 of the Bullies. WHEW!!!

I'm repotted two of the Hibiscus because they were root bound which was causing them to wilt too much and put the 3rd one in the ground. They are much happier now.

The Lowe's in Corinth didn't have these either, but along side their locked gate they had some. When I asked about them they said it was an incorrect shipment. There was a single bright yellow I really wanted.

Could cuttings be exchange in the fall and be rooted in a bubbler like brugs?? Anyone have any experience??

Judy, I'm still new to DG - Hi - I stopped by Lowe's after seeing your finds (never thought of Lowe's as being a place to find anything but mainstream plants) and I found the red one AND the white/pink one, except they were $14.00 each - boo - but i bought 'em anyway, because I'm both impulsive and shameless when it comes to plants! They're 2-gallon pots, i think - maybe even 3 - and look really healthy. So thanks for the inspiration! Just what I needed - 2 more huge plants to bring indoors this winter!! - Polly

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

Polly,

Mine were not that big!! Just wait until the Brug/Angel's Trumpet bug bites you. Have you been to the Brugmansia Forum? Do yourself a favor and don't even go there.

Welcome to Dave's, you'll love to watch the garden grow.

Judy

Bexley, OH(Zone 5b)

Hi Judy - of course we both know that now i HAVE to look... oh well... I've decided that right now my garden is really my only true sanctuary, so I indulge when I can. I'm saving your recommendations for bedtime , so I can savor the experience! I've always been an avid reader til recently - now I tend to read DG exclusively! It IS habit-forming, in the worst way! I'll let you know how late the new forum keeps me up. Looks like trouble...

Polly

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

Polly,

I am also an avid reader. DG is somewhat like reading a book, the story unfolds, a glance into the characters soul by a few words posted in anger or a show of compassion we didn't know they possessed, allow insights into human nature so that we make predictions that come true or fall short. All the ingredients of a story well told.

The little buds on my Cool Wind have fallen off. I guess it was due to transplant shock. I am going to spray some Messenger on it later today. Poor little thing. LOL
I haven't put my Blue River in the ground yet. Just need to amend some soil first.

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

I think if you move Hibiscus too much once they've set buds (even just moving the pot around too much, not necessarily even transplanting), the buds can tend to fall off. So if you've got one in a pot and it has buds, I would leave it alone until after it's bloomed.

Belleville, IL(Zone 6b)

Too late. LOL
It is very hard to have things in pots here and not have them dry out quickly. So I thought I would put it in the ground. That was a mistake, I see.

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

Windy,

The good news is mine popped back quickly from being transplanted. They are all about to flush for me again. I believe I transplanted them about 6/25

Judy

Belleville, IL(Zone 6b)

That is good news. I planted the big hardy Blue River this evening. I put some Black Kow manure in the soil to give it a good start. It had pretty well become pot bound, so had to go into the ground.
I can't wait to see those big white blooms. I have the dark and light pink and white with maroon throats that were grown from seed.
This small nursery even had a Texas Star hibiscus. It is the first time I saw one of those offered in a nursery. It was blooming, but I wanted the White one. Maybe later this season I will get one if it is still there.
I really am running out of room here.

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

So you are planning on digging them up this fall and over-wintering them??? They don't need much but do need some protection. I have enclosed dog runs, actually a 20x60 greenhouse frame, but not set up to be a greenhouse with heaters, etc.... during the winter the bullies are out during the day, depending upon the temp and are inside at night. My hibiscus survived without additional heat, but the brugs/angel's trumpets had to have a small electric heater in their area.

Judy

Belleville, IL(Zone 6b)

I put everything in the garage and it gets cold in there. I leave a flourescent light on in there 24/7 as my bunnies also over-winter in there. LOL
They are pet bunnies in a cage.
I know it gets really cold, but they all survive. I just cut way back on watering them.
I bought a nice yellow brug from a nursery here and it is in the ground. I will have to dig it up also.It flowered and now since I put it in the ground new buds are forming. I was hoping the brug would bloom again. It has such a powerful fragrance and I love it. It smells like a man's cologne.

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

Brugs are becoming so common.... today at a Flea Market they had unknown color brugs in 2 gal pots for $5. I'm sure they were unknown seeds grown out by "whomever". They also had double purple datura for $5.

The pitiful part is they all had spider mites, but the person selling them had no idea!!

Check back with me in the fall for cuttings of my brugs and hibiscus but we need advice on how to root the hibiscus www.puppygal.com/judysgardenparty.html

Judy

Belleville, IL(Zone 6b)

Funny you should mention them not knowing what they are selling. The nursery where I bought mine for 5.00 didn't know what I was asking about when I asked how much her brugmansia's were. I had to take her out and point to them. LOL Maybe it is better since that way they are cheaper.
I cut the tips off of the hardy ones and root in water, very easy. Not sure about the tropicals. The one I have is woody and the other doesn't seem to have developed a main stem yet. Possibly new growth cuttings dipped in root one and stuck in seed growing medium. Just guessing though.

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

I suppose we need to refer to them as Angle's Trumpets but being members of DG we're conditioned to call them Brugs. I had a lady at a nursery ask me what I was raising when I made mention of needing large pots for tropical trees, when I told her Brugmansia she had no idea what I was talking about, but when I pulled up my website for her to see them she said, oh yes Angel's Trumpets.
