Some of the native eupatoriums might do; eupatorium havanense has white fall blooms and is fragrant. The A&M native shrub site, http://aggie-horticulture.tamu.edu/ornamentals/nativeshrubs.indexcommon.htm, indicates it's 2 to 6' tall. Mine doesn't get but about 3' tall. It is in pretty heavy deciduous shade and blooms in the fall. Eupatorium wrightii is smaller and also a fall bloomer. Both attract butterflies and hummers while in bloom, and both are small shrubs for me. E. havenense tries to be a vine, almost, with the top kind of vining up, if I remember right. I think these are related to Greg's blue mist flower, which is also a fall bloomer aand might work for you. I've seen it growing wild and blooming near the coast. Turk's cap blooms from spring to fall and takes shade. It dies to the ground here in the winter, but comes back up in the spring and doesn't mind droughty conditions. (Mine growing in the back of the place looks just as good as those in the garden.)

Caladiums can take some sun. They are pretty all season.

japanese anemone might be a good choice for a shade tolerant perennial. Can be invasive. Camellias and encore azaleas bloom in autumn shade. Helleborus (lenten rose) might work also
