Jerrys Jungle Sale
Yep, but the sale is 3 times a year..spring,summer and fall...lol...I'll be there working..let me know that ya stopped by and tell me that you are from Dave's Garden...Get there early so ya can get the best deals.....
you work there? I missed it last year. I only heard about it last year..I am too excited.. I can't wait to see it. I aspire to do exactly that at some point...I missed the spring email. I plan to be there at 9am sharp...I'll probably be sitting in the parking area like a vulture. I am taking the day off just to see it..
I will definately introduce myself....
You all are too lucky. I wish I lived close by.
Good!!..Just tell the front desk that ya here to see Nadine or Moodene and they will let ya know where I am at...lol....I will be there for both days...by the way..ya can come early as 8:30 am..lol...
Boy, could I get into trouble there. Wish I were close enough to come.
This is open, no appointment needed? I never heard of this place before, what rock was I hiding under?
I never heard of it until last year...It is his private garden, and he will show it by appointment- but 3 times a year - spring, summer, fall it is open 2 days each to the public - and he sells..as they say...rare cultivars...so it's next friday and saturday...Debbie is going too..come with..
absolutely!
I've got a friend in Galveston being going every year for 4 years--I've known about it, just never gone.
I am looking foward to it..I was planning to go last fall and I had to cancel.. I didn't know about the spring one.
I'm so jealous!
Mysharona- you are welcome to join us! LOL if you can tolerate my messy house you can stay here- gee which would I rather do, work in the yard or clean the house?? on the other hand, it's not like you don't have your share of wonderful nurseris in FL- every time I find one that I am drooling over it's in your back yard!!
hahah..really...I would love to take a trip to florida and visit some of the nureseries..and tops tropicals..I wouldn't mind going on a Thailand trip with them.
Oh yeah!! I'd love to and I was thinking, I know this is not likely in your area of interest, but I'd like to go to Russia for some of their African Violet hibrids and Japan for some of the Clivia hybrids! Let's go!
I have driven to FL straght through before- when my dad lived there and I had only so many days off. I know the price of gas is high but I bet that w/ several in a car it would beat the cost of round trip airfare! And there are some plants that I just can't seem to find locally!
Yeah, but still...... : (
I'm originally from Bellaire :)
Come on down - uhhh - over! It is hurricane season, rates are low!!!
I've driven from here to there striaght as well, what an awful trip!! Speaking of Thailand, have you seen this flower? I was sent this picture today from a friend. It's a parrot flower, I haven't done any research on them, but they're supposedly rare and only in Thailand.
Unless of course, one works for an airline :)
I would like to go to Russia too- I have some (married in) family from Sakeline Russia..
I haven't seen that before!
I have a friend in Thailand that is always sending nice things like that. I went to Chiang Mai and Bangkok before..oh and Pataya..
Oh cool-
I was in Kauai in March...I mailed myself back loads of stuff..and some cuttings from my friends yard.
I even mailed a coconut sprout back....I don't know how long it will live, but it is doing great right now!
Oh those parrot flowers are gorgeous! It seems like I have heard them mentioned but don't believe I have ever seen one. Very nice.
My dad's family was from Russian, both of his parents born there but migrated to the states when they were very young and grew up states side w/o recolection of "the old country" no accent either. I guess I am second generation so we should for sure go visit and see what we can find, da!
yes it is a miserable drive in one straight shot, but sometimes we have no choice. So from Bellaire - well I was just at Teas earlier today, had to pick up a few african violet things- as I was driving down Bellaire Blvd I was thinking how much like some of the older southern CA cities it looked like, w/ the large palms lining the street. Very picturesque!
Yes - we are called Tropical South now on some of the new zone charts.
African violets..other than having those odd pots to keep them in..how else can I keep mine alive? The ones that are in the double pots do vine..but those pots are expensive.
RJ funny you should ask...there is an entire forum devoted to that! LOL and not all old bags either! You can put them in pots of any kind and just have a deep saucer, water into the saucer for no more than 30 minutes; you can put wicks in the post and let the wicks run into a large resevoir (sp- I know, I know) or you can by those special post which are way expensive unless you have one or two african violets, or you can use a product that Optimara makes called Watermaid- I just bought 2 to try them out- it's a "self-watering saucer" so will let you know how that goes. Most of those folks wick and I have a few that I am wicking and it does seem to work, it's just finding the best set up.
I have 2 of those expensive pots that I bought when I only had 2 AVs- it wasn't bad paying 7 bucks per pot several months apart, but now that my collection is growing there's no way. Lots of folks have them in trays w/ a grate of some kind that holds them above the water and the wick goes through the grate into the water.
Does that help?
Oh yes..that helps...as simple as watering from the saucer for 30 mins.
I have two of those pots too...and they like them! but the other suffer..
how often to water for that 30 mins?
Thanks
RJ don't let them dry out totally but don't let them be soggy- depends on how large the pot- AV pros use a potting mix that is heavy on the side of peralite so it dries out quickly; larger AVs can w/stand a bit more dry but minis are very particular. What I do is stick my finger into the pot a bit and if it's moist I am ok but if it's on the dry side I water. Even though folks tell you never water from the top you can, just try not to get the crown wet but if you do allow it to dry before night- if that makes any sense.
Okay...
well I bought the mix for them..I can't believe I have kept them as long as I have...and then...I do some fish fertilizer now and then..they love that..
thanks for the info rj. i might have to take a mini-vacation to houston! i didn't look at the map yet, but i'm assuming it's in/near houston?
RJ yeah that fish fertilizer is good- avoid and fertilizer w/ urea in it- apparently that burns their roots and I believe that after time that will kill them.
April, you were in my old stomping grounds! Is the Teas has been there as long as I can remember, unbelievable! I was raised on Newcastle between Bellaire and Bissonnett. I've never had any luck with AV's. I'm thinking with this new info I'll give it another try.

When I 1st moved to Houston area and found Teas I was amazed- I could recall seeing ads for Teas in journals that my grandfather had when I was a small child! There is a historical marker on the building @ Teas and it has been there forever! When I went to nursing school I used to study w/ a fellow student who lived off Newcastle so I got pretty famillar w/ Bellaire.
One more thing about AVs they like lots of light, either florescent or natural- they suggest a nice east window where they get morning sun- I have found one of the most important things is consistancy which is why those expensive pots that RJ and I referred to work so well. Good luck and if there is anything I can do to help let me know!
April
Yes...it's about 20 minutes off peak hours on the highway from my house...
make a trip...shall I book you the spare room?
Thanks, RJ! I know of them (spoke to a group of us) and I will definitely be there. Mini Roundup!
Rj, sounds like a party!
BTW the clematis/clerodendrun combo and brugs look fine!
ohh..cool..thanks...I had forgottent the clematis was planted there...
