I have three different types of bananas planted - its the first year in the ground for all of them. They all look very healthy and are throwing out new leaves, albeit pretty slowly (like a new leaf every two weeks)
Is this normal for the first growing season? The weather has been pretty good here......90 degree weather, rain every week (plus I water them well), and they get good light
I have fertilized twice since April - once with a 20-20-20- and another heavy with nitrogen. What else can I do to encourage growth?
slow growing nanne
Capt,
You need to feed every 7 to 10 days, also use a granular type fertilizer along with the water soluble.Alternate every other week with the 2 types of fertilizer.
Be sure to give plenty of water.
If you see the leaf edges turning brown as in burning, ease off the fertilzer for a week.
If you bag your grass clippings, place them around the trunk of the bananas as a mulch as well,as long as you don't use the weed and feed type.
thanks tropicman -
Thanks for the tips - I will try alternating as you suggest -
On a different note......have you been up to Wichita State, lately?
I was on WSU campus tonight (after class) and they have a ton of tropicals planted all over the campus. Big bananas, big sago palms, amongst others
No I haven't,I feel a trip up that way, need to check out tree top and johnsons nursery!
I wonder where they got all there tropicals at?
tree top has been getting some really cool stuff in all season -
WSU has been doing it for the last couple of years. I wish I knew I like gardening last year - as I was going to class late last fall, they were digging up all of their cannas around campus and just giving them away to whomever. People were taking arm loads (they had several hundred)
I don't know if you are familiar with campus - but the tropicals are mainly just west of the Plaza of Heroines in the center of campus and on the west side of the Rhatigan Student Center (used to be the CAC)
No,I'll just have to drive around and look.
