What do you guys do to keep ants away from your feeders?

Simi Valley, CA(Zone 10a)

It seems to be only a matter of a day or two and they find and take over my feeders. Is there any way to keep them from crawling down the hanging wire?

Huntsville, AL(Zone 7b)

I use red ant cups. You fill them with water and hang your feeder from the bottom of the cup. The ants will not cross the water and you have the bonus of seeing small birds drinking from the cups. I get mine at Wild Birds Unlimited. I think you can also get them online at www.hummingbirdsplus.org (website of the Hummer Bird Study Group). Hope this helps. Happy Humming!

I saw the new Lee Valley catalog has ant moats in them too.

I just found this advice & posted it on another thread, but I'll repost here also:

The Hummingbird Hints page at Project Wildlife says if you have an ant moat on your feeder, fill only with water, and "Avoid the use of petroleum jelly, cooking oil or tangle foot type products on feeders to deter insects."

those cups are perfect! Thanks everyone!
