Hi
I have a question
I see so many different ways to root on here..I am wondering what is the best way?
I know when I went to Bob Smoley's..he rooted them in soil and said that worked well for him
So mine are in soil..and on a shelf...I put water into the trays they are in every other day or so.
Is this the BEST way to do it?
I know it is all opinion but want your opinions...pretty please!
Water versus soil rooting
I have the best luck using little clear dixie cups with holes burned in the bottom & sides & using perilite only. Then I keep them in an old aquarium that has bottom heat. The lid is closed except for a 2 inch gap along the top. It stays pretty moist in there, but I still have to water every 4 or 5 days. They usually root in about 2 weeks. Some harder than others to get started.

Don't you have trouble with them tipping over like that? I may have to give that a try with some of mine :) I really want to do my best to get these guys going!
Yes, if the cutting is one of the very large varieties and a long one. Then I either prop it up against something, crowd it in amongst the others, or put it into a heavier pot like a terra cota one. I do have some bigger cups that I also use for some of the larger cuttings like kerrii or obovata. Most of the little ones, I just cut up small and fit several cuttings into one cup. After they root, if the roots are not very big, I sometimes just add some potting soil to the perilte & mix it up & pot them back into the same little dixie cup for awhile until they get more toots.
