I'be seen poona kheera cukes mentioned recently that I would like to give them a try. I only need 3--4 seeds and can send a SASE or trade for heirloom tomato seed or Oriental vegetable seed...or bush berans...or pole beans. DG mail me ....
Thanks,

poona kheera
Um...poona?
YES.... poona kheera. what's your question????
LD
I will drop a few in the mail for you tonight, my friend!
No-no (pushing Sequee out of the way) i'll send you some! JK Sequee, how are yours doing? Did those eggplant ever get going? I had some awful, virus looking sadness on my asian long beans, had to rip the whole lot out. Am waiting for the second planting to come up and see if they are bad too...
Salemsunshine, here is the description from Baker Creek,
Poona Kheera
Cream/light green fruits, very delicious flesh, crisp, juicy, sweet and mild, one of my favorite varieties. Fruit shaped like a potato, with skin turning brown as they ripen. One of our best varieties for disease resistance and very hardy. Vines produce early and with very heavy yields. A wonderful heirloom from India that has become our most "asked for" cucumber.
CottonPicker, If you like them and want seed for next year, i have quite a few. I am growing them for the first time this year too. Hope they taste good!

Sheesh!
My long beans aren't doing so well either. In y case it's a matter of setting up the bean trellis in an area that's jut been (sorta) cleared and there are way too many bugs! They (along with my eps and peppers) are getting devoured before they hit 2". Then I replanted and when they were still tiny I sprayed - spray too strong - killed the lot of 'em all of! Then I replanted... We'll se what if anything develops.
I ended up not planted the PK's this year. I just plant a couple seeds of each and whatever takes goes in the garden. It's kind of like letting Mother Nature choose my crops for me! You will have to let me know how they taste!
WOW....... Such an outpouring of assistance!!!! VERY GRATIFYING!!!~
Thanks, fellow-gardeners!!!!! REEEEELY WANT to try them... mouth izz watteringgg..........
sequee .... how'ya been?? been a long time between trades for us.
Hope all's well.....
APPRECIAYE the flurry of offers!!!!!!!!!!!!

I will, mine are getting pretty big, lots of flowers... My eps are doing well, i have one pepper (lots more plants with flowers) and one tiny tomato about the size of a pea.
Squash is doing fantastic though. I think i will have quite a few this year ;)
Tori planted lots of morning glories and nasturtiums and they are looking great!
Is the area that you planted in the one where the tree fell?
No - I put a flower bed in there (don't even ask) and made a wonderful planter out of the tree trunk! I am excited about that. The Morning Glories are really taking off, and the Blue Shrimp Plant is doing great, too. I also planted a bunch of Dorotheanthus to run down the gaping backside.
#990-Puneri or Poona Kheera Cream/light green fruits, have very delicious flesh, crisp, juicy, sweet and mild. Fruit is shaped like a potato, with skin turning brown. Very strong vines give huge yields, and are also early. (AKA Armenian cucumber, snake cucumber and snake melon)
Well, gee, ya'll talked me into planting a few my own self!!! LOL - hope we all enjoy them!
Your seeds just went into the mailbox!
THANKS, sequee!!!! WILL let you know when they arrive.

Strange, Armenian are long and thin. They don't turn brown. Where did you get the info that they are the same?
I thought that strange, too, since I've grown the Armenian (aka Snake Cucumber) and it doesn't look anything like the Poona Kheera sounds! Which is why I had to run right out and plant some seeds!!!
I typed in "cucumber poona kheera" and the 4th listing I got had that for the description in the link for Seeds of India. Now, of course, I'm thinking I should run out and plant a few of the Armenian Cuke seeds. WIll this never end???
Actually, now that I went back and reread it, it looks like I misread the caption. I believe what its trying to say is that the cucmber, also known as Armenian cucumber, snake cucumber and snake melon, etc, etc. Then goes on to describe the specific varieties. Sorry for the confusion - that's the way I live my life! ~:-) bassackwards as my Dear Ole Daddy used to say!
I am growing the Armenian this year as well.
You want some seeds little girl?
Got some - so nananana! I actually really like them. They didn't make the cut this year 'cause i jes gots so much room, ya know??? (Unlike your garden palace!!! Do I sound envious???????)
I keep meaning to start a thread in the accessibility forum to show off the garden. It is really looking nice these days, we hung some cute solar lantern looking lights from the four arbor entrances, it looks very romantic at night. I think the bugs will appreciate it!
LOL! Please get those photos posted. I can hardly wait to see it!
Hey, Larry! My Poona Kheera have geminated in the flower bed and look very cute! All this rain for days and a bit of sunshine today, and they are ready to gooooo!
Thanks for stirring me to planting them!
That was quick!!! Yep...with all the rains & warm-ish temperatures those seeds sprout in no time. Glad you'll have Poona Kheera plants soon.
Rained all day here ..off&on. Don't know how much we've got in the last few days but more than e-nuff.
How's your distressed plant looking????
LD
Here is a description of Poona Kheera cucumbers. I am growing them, too, from plants from a nursery that I just couldn't resist. The plants are growing nicely, but alas no cucumbers yet with our cool summers. I think they look more like potatoes than Armenian cucumbers, at least from what I remember. See description at:
http://www.rareseeds.com/catlisting.php?cat=15
Yes, that description was cut and copied above - twice! LOL! (I also explained that I misread about the Armenian cuke - sorry for the confusion. Maybe I will REALLY learn to read one day - Ha!)
I would LOVE to see a photo of your plants! Mine are all of an inch tall - not much to take a gander at! I am just delighted that they decided to germinate in these heavy rains we've been happy. Happy to that they are an early variety so I still have time to check them out!
Wasn't able to check on the babies this morning - torrential rain. We had an hour or so of bright sunshine, but mow it's overcast and threatening again. Oh, boy...
Does everyone love these as much as I do?
Don't know yet..... HAIL took out my garden a couple of weeks ago-- including the Poona Kheera plants. Hope for Better luck next year....
LarryD
Howdy Folks..
I grew Poona Kheera this year, as a late crop. Those thing grow very fast! I picked my first cuke exactly 30 days (or was it 29?) after setting out the plants.
The "flavor" can leave somewhat of an astringent feeling in your mouth if picked at certain stages. Overall though I'll grow them again. (Right now I left all my "brownies" on the vines to get big so I can make "apple rings" out of them.)
Also, my vines came down with some sort of disease so they don't seem to be as resistant as they are touted to be. (I grew some in the ground and two in Earth Boxes; perhaps there was an airborne disease floating around?)
I posted some pics in Plant Files the other day. You can view them here:
http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/72557/index.html
And note...they certainly aren't exactly "potato shaped" as described in blurbs but I imagine that description comes from their mature color more than their shape?
