I got a venus fly trap and it is the cutest little thing. I was watching it this morning and it got a bug. Chomp and it was in the little trap. Does anyone else have one of these? Her name is Sadie after my bird that escaped from the house 3 years ago.

I've got one! I think I overfed it the first month (waay too much fun!)... I did not realize that after a couple of meals, the "trap" and its stalk would die back. So now my plant consists of a lot of newly forming traps and not much else! I have the pot nestled into a juice glass so I can keep the bottom 1/4 to 1/2 inch of the pot submerged in a water reservoir. I use filtered water for it, but I have not added any fertilizer, and I'm not sure if I should or if they get their extra nutrients from the bugs.

Have fun with yours!

I didn't get a fly trap- I have always heard they are difficult, but I got a butterwort and I tell you it was covered w/ those pesky fungus gnats! See there is a use for fungus gnats, they aren't there just to bug you! Anyway I liked the ping som much that I ordered a few more and expect them today or tomorrow. They are very interesting plants.

Well, I thought I would try this one since it is less costly. I read that it doesn't need fert. , 60-70 degree temps in spring and summer, when it goes dorment it like 40 degree temp. You are supposed to let it catch its own bugs and it won't be overfed. I will let you know how it does.

Critt,

It is not to be submerged in water. It is supposed to sit in a dish on gravel with water under it.

I have read that you are supposed to use filtered water or rain water as opposed to tap water- don't know about anyone else's water but our's is awful! Since I switched my orchids to filtered water they have really improved!

Makshi, I got mine at the Philly flower show, and I'm growing it as the seller suggested, with only the bottom of the pot sitting down into the water. I think they're supposed to like it really moist, but not so they're swimming.

Let it catch bugs on its own, hmmm.... I'll try that, or at least I won't keep putting another bug in as soon as a trap opens back up, LOL.

Makshi there is a carnivorous plant forum; however, they are not quite as friendly as the folks here. Keyring knows quite a lot about CPs and she might be able to give you some information.

Yes, I know. I love the people here because they are so friendly.

Would they like the ceramic self watering devises? I finally found something that did. I have a Peace Lily and it love the ceramic elephant I have.

nan,

I don't know if they would get enough water. Maybe someone will stop in a add their two cents worth.

I do have a couple venus fly traps. :)
they can be tricky BUT it you keep them under the lights and in a tray of water they should be fine.
1. don't fertilize them :)
2. dont' use cholorinated water with them :)

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

under the lights, eh? I guess I'll be moving mine! LOL

Thanks for confirming the "no fertilizer" bit, Lorry.

Vero Beach, FL(Zone 9b)

LOL..if yours is doing Ok critter :) no reason to move it :) but mine seemed to need a lot of light :) and upon reading..it seemed to confirm this for me. He is much healthier now that he gets more :)

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Mine is in a corner of the morning room, which gets a ton of natural light, so that may be why he is doing all right. I wonder how long it takes them to grow new traps? Mine has put up a bunch of new shoots, but no mature traps yet. Hmmm, perhaps it does need to go under the lights!

OK, what does "OT" mean? I'm a little slow here.....

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

i think it means they are posting off the African Violets and Gesneriads forum topic

Silver Spring, MD

Off Topic. Ohhhhhh! I didn't know what that meant either. Thanks

Guess what ( I hope this doesn't make anyone sick) but my VFT caught herself a big fly. It was so interesting. I am going to have to find me some other carnivorous plants.
