Touchpad is out/off?

My HP Pavillion notebook has been having troubles, the dreaded blue screen--for a couple weeks now warning me of software not installed correctly or a problem on drive. Last nite it decided to run a ckdsk all by itself and hung up while deleting files. I got the courage just to shut it down this am, and when restarted, it continued the ckdsk and deleted more files.

Now my touchpad is frozen (light off too), can I fix this anywhere else?? Should I call HP? Starting in Safe Mode, makes me nervous, I don't know what I'm doing :(
