I should introduce myself

Las Vegas, NV(Zone 8a)

I've already posted a couple times and obviously not had time to read all the directions:) I'll get it eventually. This site is great! Everyone is so helpful and kind, thanks!
I'm 45, 3 kids, BGB, all over 20, one married. I have a husband of 26.5 years(years married, not age:>)...We live together with my Aunt who's suffered a couple strokes over the past 4 years & who is the one who "made me" start gardening. She loves her flowers but just can't take care of them any longer, I was "forced" to take care of them. I use to HATE yard work, now my hubby can't get me in(what does DH stand for?)...he thinks I'm nuts, so do the neighbors whose yards I dig around in and use for my classroom. The house next door houses disabled adults and use to belong to a extemely talented professor of hortoculture. No one has time to keep the place up and the plants scream at me to help them. Plus there are new and exciting things popping up all the time. I go somewhere and have to weed, it's crazy...I love it!
My "must have" tool is the Mattock. Had a TRAM Flap proceedure Jan 05 (for breast cancer) and can't use the hoe.
I'm so excited about my new love for gardening and learning about it. It's a great release from life's stresses.
PS... It has also helped me to lose 36 pounds since March. I also walk a little & basically follow eating habits similiar to weight watchers. What will I do in the winter....Uhgggggggggg. My oldest son's girlfriend gave me the cute boots as our yard retains soooo much water. It's finally OK.
Thanks again, Karen

My niece, myself(middle), sister-in-law, great niece last summer 05. Previous pic was end of May.
Not that I'm about posting pics of myself but wanted to show what gardening has helped me to do........to quit grazing:>)
Oh ya...This pic is taken at Peace Arch Park in Blaine, WA
We're about 30 minutes south.

Welcome to DG. This is very addictive and you will find less and less time to garden! LOL (It really is true.) We go off topic a lot, but that's how we get to know each other.... Enjoy!

Well I'm outside until dark and have started coming in and checking everything here out! There is soooo much info. For our area we're inside most of winter so I'll be an expert gardener by next year:) I tell my DH (so glad it wasn't dumb husband....mine is a dear) Although I'm thinking he thinks ...wife! what wife! I'm glad he's so easy going, likes to cook and doesn't have very high expectations for the inside. Last night he said, "Karen! You have dirt everywhere!:>) It's on the counter, computer table, floor and table! I know, I know....I bring stuff in to check out the pics to see what it is....Plant stuff in the kitchen sink and .......well you know. Getting my stuff more organized and have a planting center outside now. Only thing on the kitchen counter right now is just washed lettuce and a few herbs:)

Welcome Karen,

I love your boots! How fun.
I just started gardening 2 years ago and am already addicted also.

Care to try your hand with African Violets this winter? I just bought my first 4 and, I am learning about them in av forum.

Tam..I haven't been next door in a few days, will go take a peak tomorrow. I planted a squash and zuccini for the people of the house. Sending a couple pics of some of the cool things that I've found over there. I need to check their fig tree to see if it has fruit this year. It would be nice to dry it. My home gardening is coming along.

Funny you should ask, Rachel:) I just picked up two a few weeks ago at the grocery store on clearance for .25 each. My Nana loved AV. I put them in their own special soil...and had just watched the episode on AV on Rebecca's Garden......I have the DVR set up to "Record Series" I need to start watching!

This was my crazy gardening weekend.....Fri. to my cousin's for a "probably only 2 hours of work" surprise from her mother-in-law (my Auntie) and I. Turned out to be 4 hours of hard labor!!! For just a few beds with few weeds! The soil was worse than mine! I swear it was like breaking cement! Worked yard at home till dark. Sat. was garage sale morning(found some great gardening stuff, pots are the best) took the boat out for a little lake action, went to BBQ at The Aunties, took my Mattock and did her side bed. Watering this am, off to church, to my Parent's for a BBQ with my Mattock and put in my Mom's new plants and herbs. (she bought me herbs too:) So now I work for food :0)
Oh...and stopped by my Aunt and Uncles after church to see their UNBELIEVABLE food garden....how does he do it??? ......and will be going out to help them out with weeding. They both have knee problems and no one to help.
Picture of a cool Iris I found next door....

Welcome to all who are even newer than I. I've only been a member for about a month and must admit, I didn't properly peruse the site and accordingly never introduced myself! Just jumped in and wondered why sometimes I didn't get a response! LOL

This is a super place and on a hot day like today (hot for the Pacific Northwest anyway, and I don't do well in heat) I am inside more than outside.

You come from a gorgeous area, Murmur... It was actually a trip we took to your area with Master Gardeners that inspired my husband to take the classes. He saw how beautiful it could be.
Welcome, a little belatedly!

Thank you, CJ, and wonderful that your hubby became a master gardener, too!! I am longing to do so also, but must wait until I completely retire (I only work part-time now). The next classes for Island County - I live on Whidbey Island - are set for January of 2008 so I'm hoping I can retire in time. Actually, I can, but I'm not sure I'll be ready to leave "my people." I job coach developmentally disabled adults and just can't picture myself leaving them. They bring me joy, too, along with gardening.

The Woodlands, TX(Zone 9a)

That will be very hard for you to leave..... I have been a Master Gardener for 13 years, and in all that time my husband hated gardening. Now that he has seen the Pacific NW and learned from the classes what & why, he is very enthusiastic. It's great to have him alongside (and sometimes - when it's hot - out there all by himself) lol
