How Close Is Too Close?

Lakebay, WA

I have a patch of daylillies in bloom right now. They are the orangish ones (someone posted a picture but I can't remember the name...). Only 1/20 of the patch has buds/blooms and I am afraid it is because they have reproduced too closely together. We've owned the home less than a year, so it is only now that they are full grown that I see a problem. Lots of "parents" and "children" plants all in a 3' x 6' space. How close should they be to each other? I have plenty of room for replanting/relocating late fall, but once I dig up all of them, I don't know how many should go into an area.
Thanks for any suggestions! BTW, forecast says SSSSUUUUNNNNN (watch it rain more *sigh*)

marionslaten, I'm seeing the same thing in my garden, my daylilies are gettingcrowded. well actually it's hosta, ferns, everything. I started buying compost by the yard and spreading it in all of my beds. when I seperate the daylilies I use a pruning saw on the root ball until I get down to a few crowns then pull them apart. I plant out 3 to 5 crowns in a 2 to 3 foot area. that leaves room to grow until in 3 to 5 years I have to do it again. good luck,hostajim1

thanks for the advice! I know they won't want to flower much the first year after I rip them apart, but I just know that, if I take the right steps this fall, then a summer or two down the road, it will all be worth it. My husband doesn't really like the daylillies, but this will be my excuse to make that part of the bed larger and incorporate them into different areas too =D. I have been toying with bed designs so as to keep the daylillies from being that prominent and planting with other things, but it's still just in pencil right now. The inspiration hasn't come to me.
