Is this hoya a cross between H. carnosa and H. longifolia, or a cross of H. carnosa and H. shepherdii? I have tried searching in the plant info pages, but can't find it. Figured one of you would know.
Marcy
Hoya minibelle
Oooops...I forget.
ANN Wayman...where are youuuuuuuu? (crying in the wilderness)
Carol
H. carnosa x H. shepherdii is what I have written down as facts for putting on my website.
Christina
Marcy,
Carol's Hoya List at http://www.bigislandgrowers.com/ghp/AHlist.php has H. cv. Minibelle listed as H. shephardii X H. longifolia.
Ann
She does? I wonder where she got that?
Ms. Burton, in her book "Hoyas I know and Love" says " "'Minnibelle (sic), which appears to be a cross between H. carnosa (or the unknown species call by some 'Silver Leaf') and H. shepherdii".
Guess I better go fix that!!!
I just foundfd a bunch in my gh that are all blooming!!! SofaG...gotta love 'em.
You better take pictures Carol!!!
BTW, what is the correct cross for the minibelle??
I would go with Ms. Burton on this one...I obviously was asleep when I wrote it!!!!
Patti...that is Hoya bella. Check the soil & if it is drying out...add water immediately. I keep mine like African violets & have them sitting in a dish of water. I let the dish under them dry out sometimes, but mostly I keep it with water in it. I have another one outside I keep in a self-watering type pot, and it does well also. I used to kill them by letting them go too dry & then adding water after the roots were already dead.
Marcy
Thanks Marcy fo all your help. I did put mine outside under 70% shade cloth, and watered it well. It is doing better already. I will get a self watering pot for it. Does it like heat and humidity?
Patti
Loves it! Mine are getting ready to bloom big time now that the weather has turned hot here.
It can also take some fairly cool temps. I have left them outside here in S. Calif. for the past 3 winters and they did OK. However, it did not go below 38 degrees here and that was only for a brief period of time a couple of nights. Mostly it was in the low 40s at night for only a couple of hours just before dawn. I think the fact that it only stays cold briefly is a factor in what will survive also.
Marcy
Marcy,
It sounds like we are in the same zone. I really appreciate you taking your time to help me. Thanks again,
Patti
Actually, I am in zone 10 as I am near the coast. If you get frosts in winter, you would not want to leave hoyas outside unless you have a greenhouse to protect from frost.
Marcy
Marcy,
I was recently told by Master gardeners here in Houston that our area is a 10 , because of it microclimate. North Houston temperatures can be at least 3 -7 degrees lower than here in the winter. They also get frost we don't get here. I am closer to the coast too.
I always check the temps in the winter, and I will protect my babies from any chill. Heck my husband even know if it get near 40 degrees to grab my babies. LOL
If Mama not happy no ones happy.
Patti
Rose, the bella likes cooler temps. See http://www.bigislandgrowers.com/ghp/AHtemps.php for more info.
ann
Thanks Ann.
