I suppose this groovy little guy that grew in place of the clematis flower is a seed pod? I've never seen clematis go to seed. It is cool looking!
Clematis seed pod?
Very nice. I'm glad you like it. If it looses its novelty, cut it off for the plant's sake. You've not lived until you've seen the great, large perfectly round but perfectly swirled coriolis-syle heads of some of the larger flowered hybrids. I think that we have all been making a mistake by forgetting to add seedhead pictures to PF's Clematis.

So we should deadhead clematis unless we want the seed heads for their visual interest? I wasn't sure about this and haven't touched mine yet.
what would happen if you leave them go? back to the orignal clematis it was ? would anything at all grow from it? I wouldn't mind seeing what the original plant looked like.
The seed heads are interesting looking. They do lend themselves to visual interest.
It really depends which Clematis you are leaving them on & what growing zone you are in. I have had to cut the seed heads off of Sweet Autumn Clematis, otherwise I find it reseeding itself all over my garden. In fact, I consider it invasive in my growing area & most definitely in zone 9a! The species Clematis may have a tendency to spread if the seed heads are left on, whereas the hybrid Clematis won't.
Kenton: You're right! We should be adding the seedheads to Plant Files too.
If its a clematis that grows good here and you save the seeds--please think of me! ;)

Okay Deb, your name is on the first seeds.
For me, I have had the clematis for 3 years now, following carefully the "hide the roots" directions. This year it had 4 blooms, up 2 from last years 2 blooms..Other than the rose fertilizer that was suggested - I have no idea what to do with it except leave it alone. The flowers are a terrific deep burgandy, looking like velvety christmas bows. I suppose mabe in the end it is a matter of maturity?
After all my white passion vine is 3 years old now, and is just now throwing out lots of flowers. It is from Costa Rica - I brought back seeds and planted it..It is a behometh now.
Clematis I haven't had luck with--but I'm starting to get a fair amount of shade now in some parts of the yard--only took 12 years. Oaks just take forever. In 3 years--when they would bloom, I'll probably have real decent shade. lol
Which passie is it from Costa Rica?
I don't know..I snatched seeds when I was there.
These clematis I planted the roots on the side of the deck stairs..so they have their required shaded root thing.
Last year someone told me that if I cut the seeds heads off, it would cause a second round of blooms. So, I cut the seed heads off of Miss Bateman and Nelly Moser. What a mistake that was. I ended up destroying a number of vines. I'll never do that again.
Yeah, I am leaving them on. Clematis are a bit more difficult to grow for me here, and I could use the extra help in seeds..
