Hi Everyone,
I just dug this up from my brother's yard this evening and he has no idea what it is and neither do I. He says they planted it last spring and it has sprouted up all over his beds in various areas of his yard. It's pretty but it's purple and I have too much purple. But I do like it so much that I'll find a spot for it.
I'm sure you garden afficionados know what this is....can you clue me in? Ceejay.....your expertise is requested my dear!!!!!!
Thanks,
Kristi

I am not Ceejay, but it looks like liatris to me.
Hi Frostweed, I think we've spoken before and your expertise is most welcome also! Hope I didn't offend. I'll look up liatris right now.
The plant files aren't finding it. Any other suggestions?
No problem here is the link, there are a few varieties.

Josephine.
yahoo, my guess was correct!
Thank you both! Do you folks have any idea why it spreads so much down here?
No I don't, and I wish i did, I have seen liatris growing wild abundantly in the Houston area, but not much around here, and I love it. I wish it would spread for me like that, it is a wonderful Texas native plant.
Josephine.
Not sure but it seems to love our horrid summers! Last year I noticed some planted in the landscaping on south side of 59 before Williams Trace- it was very pretty and sure held up to the conditions- full sun and all.
I purchased one of these on our Austin Nursery Tour and now that I have it in my garden, I wish I would have purchased 10 more! It is beautiful. I do have one question though and I do give warning, that it may sound ignorant. When the "stalks" (I don't know what else to call them) quit blooming do they just fall over and does the plant make a new stalk?
It really is a beautiful flower ....told my brother....."get me a shovel" ....western music in background. "L"
ms_merae, since I just dug it up yesterday I have know idea what it does or how to care for it. I'm sure April and Frostweed know much more than I.
I think I'd like to have it in several areas of my yard as well. Hopefully it will spread s well as my brother's did. He said he planted 2 last year and now they are all over the place. Even in beds they were not planted in. Guess we have to be careful that it doesn't get too invasive.
Liatris only blooms once a year, when the blooms are finished they will make seed, and then dry up. You can cut them down to six inches from the ground at that time, and collect the seed.
If you don't want them to make seed, you can cut them back after they finish blooming.
The plant is a perennial growing from a corm or bulb, and will come up again in the Spring.
I want it! I have been looking for Liatris and I can't find it! I have the spot all picked out - it is bare right now, just waiting. Is this L. pychnostachya (did I spell that right?). Probably not spicata... Does he have anymore that he would like to get rid of? Does anybody have any they would like to get rid of?
CJ, just a beggin' away.....
and tha would be pink hairspray! I sent a care box up to camp with every color of hairspray, and bracelets, and hair clips and butterfly tatoos so the girls in her cabin could all go crazy. They had a blast!
