Official name Saintpaulia tongwensis. From the Usambara Mountains. An original African Violet.

I ordered it from Optimara. I really like it. Reminds me of the violets that grow in the lawn except the leaves are longer.

Lovely, Nanna!!

Thanks PMcP. It was a little dirty when it got here but it has cleaned up real well.

WOW nanna! That's gorgeous! If you ever have leaves or plantlets of that one to share, I'd love to have one! Are all the species AVs that pretty??

Silver Spring, MD

Gosh, I don't know. This is the first time I have ever seen one of the native plants. I can certainly tell why the person who found them wanted to work with them and try to develop a plant that would have the traits that people like us would like.

Blue Boy was one of the first 10 to come from a plant like this and I love Blue Boy. I would like to be able to keep them healthy and growing well. Its' fun to have the native original and then one of the first to become hybridized. It's like having a little bit of history in your pocket.

Species are fun to grow ! Nice of Optimara to carry a few that are not their line.
Lorry bought one was going to send me leaves. I'd buy it like I have grown many Speices before even this one but then I'd go crazy trying to get them all. lol
Beautiful Nanna
I will be buying Isabelle though !
S. tongwensis (S 6) 1947 (B. Burtt) Single pale blue, may show dark pinwheel marking when grown cool; 4-6 per peduncle, very floriferous. Dark green, pointed, narrow, very thick, hairy, slightly serrated/some red back. May appear variegated with mottled pattern over main veins. Usually upright single crown, rarely suckers. Standard. Saintpaulia species
Oh and yes ALL of the Species are beautiful !
And Blue Boy was not only one of the first ten Av's Blue Boy was the very first ones !

Well, there you are. I am on my way to a collection.

That's lovely! I really like the leaves.

Nanna very pretty!

What an elegant little beauty!

The species are certainly fascinating. I've got a Saintpaulia pendula that SarahJo sent me last year. It's been growing slowly, but is finally starting to fill out with multiple crowns (it's a trailer). I think I sent a sucker to Kenton, and I've got a leaf pot that's developing slowly but will hopefully produce a couple of plantlets for fall shipping. Nanna, if you're interested, I'll save one for you in trade for a future baby of S. tongwensis! :-)

Silver Spring, MD

I would love one and I am planning to set leaves of this plant if anyone is interested.

I'm interested! Let me know what I've got that you'd like and I'll be sure to have leaves down of it.

Silver Spring, MD

Thanks, RG. Do you have any Wrangler's? I fell in love the MsC photo. Anything with pink variegation. I'm am already excited about the fall trade and the trade lits that will be posted. I will be doing some transplanting of babies today. My second leaf tray is starting to ear. Didn't think I would be so into the propagation end of av's.

I've got Wrangler's Jealous Heart. Would you like that one?

Silver Spring, MD

I would love it. Do you want to swap leaves or plantlets?

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

I have a nice variegated Wrangler's baby growing I think the Green Pastures ? One like MsC has with all the pretty variegation for trade. Hint hint Nanna :))
The Species are so cool. Some remind me of the Vintage foliage on some of Dates Wasp plants.
Jill do you know which one you have ?
'S. pendula (S 8) 1958 (B. Burtt) Single pale-medium blue, one per peduncle, difficult to bloom. Pale to yellow-green, textured, slightly elongated to ovate, very hairy, serrated, variable internode length/pale back. Trailer. Saintpaulia species
>
S. pendula var. kizarae (S 8a) 1964 (B. Burtt) Single lavender, 2-4 per peduncle, floriferous. Light green, round, hairy, serrated. Trailer. Saintpaulia species

Got it Allison. Guess I had better get a leaf down right now or the poor plant will be bear.

I have a sucker of Wrangler's Jealous Heart that I recently potted up and a Mom leaf with babies, so plantlets would be fine with me. I'd feel more comfortable if they all had a little more time to grow, though. I had a devil of a time getting that sucker to root, but it finally did and I don't want to interfere with that. But if you're just now getting ready to put down leaves of yours, it would work out for plantlets in the fall, don't you think?

Morning Nan,

What a dainty violet! TFS!

Joanne

Red Oak, NC(Zone 7b)

The leaves are so big! Very pretty!

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I'll add it to your wish list, Nanna! Allison, I don't know which one mine is, as the label said only S. pendula 'Pendula', and it hasn't bloomed yet. I think Sarah picked it up for me at a show.

Silver Spring, MD

Hey thanks, Joanne. It seems to be growing quite well.
