I was wondering when is the time to dig garlic. It is starting to form seed heads. Should it be dug now or wait for the seeds to drop. Thanks.
Cindy
How do I know when to dig my garlic?
Cut the flowers off so it puts all that energy into making the bulb as large as possible. When the greens are almost all dried, you can harvest them. Shoot for 3-4 green leaves, since each represents a layer of protective covering over the heads. Mine aren't usually ready for another month.
Thank you so much!!!!!
Cindy
You're welcome!
I grow creole garlic and they don't necessarily die back--I have to dig one up and check it.

So does that mean you can keep a continuous crop growing and just harvest as you need to?
No--it means the leaves don't die back completely when ready....alot of the short-neck southern suitable varieties are like this.
Debbie
Do you decide it's ready for harvest just based on the size of the heads/cloves?
yes--pretty much...and I look at the time of year compared to the year before.
