Hi everyone, I want good quality information on growing, blooming and hybridizing Hoya. I would also like an individual "synopsis" of every hoya, hybrid and related speicies. Do I think this unrealistic? Yes.
So, after reading YEARS of DG hoya postings, and reading most of what I have unearthed on the web, I figured I go to the source. YOU. The best sounding stuff comes from this forum, so I thought I would ask the experts and the hungry-to-learn-more folks, where the best info comes from.
Are there books to be purchaed, obscure web pages to be found or ancient scrolls to be translated?
What I would really like is to know is:
1. What temps does it prefer to grow and to bloom.
2. Soil, Light and water prefrences.
3. Fertilizers.
4. How to hybridize.
I know there is a lot of general info out there but I want to know what each plant likes the best. This way I can get the ones that will do best for me as a newbie. Soon however, I plant to reach for a jr. HJM badge and grow the really tricky ones :~) I figure with devout training, no sleep, 24 hr. DG and a lot of diet pepsi, it should only take a decade or three....
I have over 30 now and more on the way (eeeegads! how do you hide them from the DH? Hey, that could be a post on it's own) and I have read several that I have are hard to grow or bloom. So, with more info I will have a better shot at keeping them alive and getting them to bloom.
I read most if not all the post on this fourm and copy them when a topic comes up that pertains to any hoya I have I print it off . But things get spilled, new puppies like to chew and so on, and my neatly piled staks of papers got trashed. Any place to look would be greatly appriciated!
Love this forum! God bless you all, -joanne
Where to look for Hoya info....
The most user-friendly place I would suggest you start is the Hoya Information site via the Pimpette.
Hoya Temperature Tolerance http://www.bigislandgrowers.com/ghp/AHtemps.php
Hoya Growing Conditions http://www.bigislandgrowers.com/ghp/AHtips.php
About Light http://www.bigislandgrowers.com/ghp/AHlight.php
About Hybridizing http://www.bigislandgrowers.com/ghp/AHhybrid.php
Don't forget the sticky at the top of the Hoya forum.
Sometime when you come to visit your grandmother, you can stop by and I will give you photocopies of what info I have (just let me know when you plan on dropping by).

Joanne - Yes...there is so much information and so little at the same time. I think it is important to 1. know how to grow tropical plants indoors and 2. basically if you hoya comes from a hot steamy part of the tropics or a drier one. Ann Wayman is in the last steps of revising The World of Hoyas which will give a lot of good information about the different ones...and hoyas in general.
It is so hard to "tell" someone how to grow their hoyas because everyone's growing conditions are so different....as well as their medium which is based on how they grow them and how often they want to water....and the relative humidity of the air etc. There is a general rule of thumb...and then after that it is each individual hoyas needs (like some like to be grown dry in the winter and wetter in the warm months)...that that information comes from reading/talking/chatting/growing.....
I find good equivalents are the Orchid Cactus and many orchids....
Pssssst - let us know what you find out, OK?
Carol
Thank you both for the info. Ann, I had read and reread the AH info and it is great. I guess I will wait for AW's book to be finished and keep printing off any info that pertains to hoya I have or want.
THanks again! -joanne
