Hoya problem?

Oshkosh, WI(Zone 4b)

I bought this small Hoya a few months ago, and it just hasn't been doing all that well. Just yesterday, I noticed that the underside of some of the leaves are looking crinkled. What could be the reason for this? What should I be doing with this Hoya to help it do better?

Thanks for any help.

It looks t o me like it is VERY unhappy. The first thing I would do is to take it out of the pot and check the roots. Cut up the stem with the roots from the very bottom up up and up until you find live tissue. If none...trim all the rotted stem off, soak the whole rootless plant in some room temp water for overnight (with a drop or two of Hormex or Superthrive if you have it) and then propagate afresh....

If you bought an EA plant, it is drowning. EA puts wetting agents in their soil and we kill them by treating them normally.

If you are growing it like a succulent, it is thirsty and the roots may be dead.

No worries...hoyas are fairly tough...give it a go!!

Hopefully some of the more experienced growers will offer their advice.

In the meantime, it looks to me as though the roots are unable to supple the rest of the plant with moisture. This could be because you have not watered the plant enough, or because the plant was over-watered somewhere along the way.

If you have not been watering it very frequently, you might want to slowly increase the moisture level of your soil (most hoyas do not like to dry out - even though there is mythology floating around about how they love to get bone-dry).

If your plant has been over-watered, then you probably have root rot and the plant is most likely lost, so you should take some cuttings and root them, so you can start over - something you should do regardless of the situation.

Please don't take any action until someone with more experience comes along and confirms this or provides you with some better advice.

Follow AlohaHoyas advice - she is quite knowledgable!

Thanks Carol, for the great advice. I've never owned a Hoya before, so I'm not quite sure how to treat it. I'll check the roots and see how they look.

How should I propogate a Hoya? Do I take stem cuttings and root in soil or water? Or should I just take the rooted stems and try to restart them in a new pot?

Hi Ann, thanks for the advice. I'm going to have to check the roots and see what they look like. I was being careful not to overwater, but I could have gone too long withough it. Hopefully I can nurse this one back to health!

Candace, I would clip a couple of those vines (with leaves) and put about an inch and a half to two inches of the vine into a glass of water. Other's here may give you better advice on how to root.

There is a post very close by asking the same questions....good advice....

Root in water, or stick in a clear plastic ZipLoc bag with a little water inside, or stick the cuttings in a pot with moist soil and put a clear plastic bag cover over it to keep the humidity high.
You should also check the "Hoya related Links" post on top of this Hoya forum, towards the bottom there are a few links from past discussions on propagation of Hoyas.

Thanks everyone for the wonderful suggestions! I'm so new to Hoyas that I'm not sure what to do, but everyone here has been so helpful, and I really do appreciate that!
