Disocactus phyllanthoides

Fair Lawn, NJ(Zone 6b)

aka Nopalxochia phyllanthoides or Deutsche Kaiserin.

My plant is flowering on the deck, although the heat today probably shortens the show a bit.

Happenstance's thread is getting very long, I figured perhaps a new one to continue might be in order.

and another one pic of the same.
I had repotted the plant this Spring into a lighter mix containing some orchid bark. I see lots of new growth, which is not as spotty. Hopefully it stays clean.

Perhaps I should have called this thread ...etc.

I thought my Epi oxy aka Big Mama was getting ready to flower perhaps this weekend. I counted 22 larger buds. I think the heat pushed them along much quicker and we had 9 of them open already yesterday. Also Epi phyllanthus has been flowering nicely the last few weeks, so sitting on the deck we enjoyed the somewhat spicy scent of the phyllanthus intermingled with the beautiful white floral scent of Epi oxy.
Here is what I came home to yesterday:

a little later in the evening -
many of the flowers are bundled. I tried to get a picture of the whole thing, but I would need a larger deck to do that. Here is a part of it:

How can I resist posting more of this? Took this picture around 10 pm, they are almost fully open.

I think the phyllanthus flowers are really cute, sometimes they reflex, sometimes they don't. Yesterday's stayed fairly flat.

Ursula, your pictures are amazing! You are a professional photographer now with your new camera! Those are wonderful, wonderful shots. Thanks for sharing your lovely flowers. I can only imagine how wonderful it must have smelled on your deck that night. Your Deutsche Kaiserin is amazing too.

I have a few buds on my Epi oxy, but I think they are a long way away from blooming yet. I do have one on my Epi strictum that should bloom soon, and I have had one on my E. pumilum. It has been cool here lately again, but we are expecting a heat wave this coming week.

I had two final buds open, and I don't think there will be many more blooms after these two. Here is one which I think is Frances C.

Here is the last one which I think is Tel Star:

Wow, Ursula! What an incredible show! I bet the fragrance was just heavenly. Congrats on so many lovely blooms at once. That is what we wait for all year long:-)

You betcha!! The next crop of buds is coming along....
I just started to repot some Epis. I must say, quite a few leaves look a bit spent. Which is what you were reporting a while ago. Not Epi oxy, but flowering seems to take a lot out of those hybrids.

Ursula, I read your Libya info. on your web site and saw some of the pictures that you took. I will go back to see the rest. The ones that I saw are wonderful. That must have been an amazing and unforgettable experience for you.

Yes, Some of my leaves looked so wrinkled and so spent that I cut them off and threw them away. I would be embarassed to give them away looking like that. People would think I was a very bad plant caretaker! LOL! The one affected most was Paradise, which was a huge grower with very long leaves. The plants were rootbound in a container so perhaps those large and long leaves didn't get enough moisture while they were flowering. I tried to keep the soil moist at all times though. They were too long anyway so I figured it was probably best to cut them off. The new growth looks nice and shiny and fresh. Have fun re-potting! I'm probably going to have to do that next year.

Clare,
I am happy you are taking the time to look at the trip pictures.
I didn't take any "real pics" of the solar eclipse itself, since we had really good people in the group to do that already with appropriate equipment. But I was hoping to give people the feel of the eclipse, and the Roman and Greek ruins were most interesting to visit. Have fun.

Oh, I didn't get to the Roman and Greek ruins yet, but I will. Those are wonderful. I took an Art History class in college and remember falling in love with some of the sculptures, architecture, and statues, especially during certain periods. I will definitely be back to check those out. Thanks for posting them for all to see. It's nearly as good as being there.

My strictum bloomed last night for the first time. Unfortunately, I missed it! Ha! But I found it this morning, and it is lovely. I'm not getting much fragrance from it though. I'm not sure if this one has fragrance at night or not.
