I bought this hibiscus 2 weeks ago on Ebay. I got the plant and it bloomed. However, the bloom was red with white markings. (See next post). I emailed the seller and this was the response:
"the hibiscus you have is a hibrid cross between the dragon fire and a white hibiscus it is not uncommon to have the parent bloom at times, just like I would not be surpised if next year you get more white in the flower then red .please read up on hibiscus hybrid crosses and also know that yours are 6 month new crosses.the older the plant gets the more blooms it will develop.also any other hibiscus that you have nearby will & can pollinate it to become a different color next year"
Can someone give me some advice, please?
Thanks, julie
Hybrid Question
I think plants with variegated colors like that can show some variation, but yours looks like the flower has a different shape too, which means it's not the plant you thought you were getting. And he's definitely wrong on the part about the flowers being a different color next year depending on what pollinates with them...any seeds that come as a result of that pollination could definitely turn out to be different colors but pollination won't change the color of the original plant.
I knew it, but I just needed some expert advice to back me up. I have never done hybridizing, but I've done enough gardening in my life to know that the original plant won't change thru pollination. You've been very helpful. Thanks, julie
Julie of the 2 flowers which is a picture of yours?
Very pretty
The 2nd picture is the one I received.
Picture 1 is the one I was supposed to get.
I emailed the seller again and told him that if he didn't send the right one, I would file dispute.
Thanks, julie
I am no expert on hibiscus but his explanation sounds like huey to me too! Makes no sense at all. Both are pretty though.
That seller is a fake one. He/she sold you a nice one variety called "El Capitolio" but it's a garden variety easy to root that grows quickly with 4" little blooms. But the picture he/she shows in ebay is Dragon's Breath, a huge hybrid (8-9" blooms) that needs to be grafted and hard to grow (not recommended for beginners).
There's no any cross between Dragon's Fire and a white hibiscus in that bloom.
I'd do a negative report of it in ebay.
Regards
Carlos

Carlos is definetly right I just bought the same "El Capitolio" at Lowe's this weekend. I do not know alot about Hibiscus but yours will never look like the first picture. The seller definetly was not telling you the truth.
froggie, feel bad for you. I hope it gets resolved to your satisfaction

I have "Black Dragon and the red El Capitolio(VERY easy to root).
They are two different hibiscus. I too, would write a negative feedback to seller, if he doesn't resolve it to your satisfaction!

Seller has made me so mad! Claims he doesn't have any more of the Dragon's Breath, so can't send another plant. Wants to refund my money minus the cost of the one he sent me. I really wanted this hibiscus, but of course, another bad transaction on Ebay. They are becoming more common.
Thanks for all your help. julie
This guy is either a scam artist or totally doesn't know what he's talking about, either way I don't know if I would believe that his Dragon's Breath is really Dragon's Breath anyway, so you're probably saving yourself from more trouble and disappointment by taking the refund.
Julie he has to refund shipping to because it is his mistake.
Julie, can you tell us who is the seller and where he's from? The picture he sent you isn't from him. I have it in my files since 2004 in a higher resolution and it was taken by a well known hybridizer in Tahiti. This tahitian guy also sells in Ebay but just seeds and he has a very good reputation.
I guess your seller never had a Dragon's Breath plant.

Carlos
I would also like to know his name. He would never recieve my business. I paid 4.24 for the one he actually sent you from Lowes this spring. And I got the peach one just like it.
Sorry this happened.
Love you,
Sandy ^8^
seller is icelandmoss.
What gets me is that he had a 99.3% feedback! I am still going to file a dispute even after I get my refund. He grossly misrepresented his product and you all read the stupid answer he gave me. Thanks for being so caring and for the advice.
Julie
I'm guessing that his feedback is so high because people post upon receipt of their plants, and may not know if they've been duped for some time...and some may even accept his lame explanations.
In my experience, eBay is very hands-off in these matters. If he refunds you, they will likely consider the case to be acceptably resolved. I'd still report it, tho- maybe it'll shake the jerk up and he'll rethink what he's doing.
So sorry, Julie...I know what a disappointment it must be.
Tess
Julie, I saw the item in ebay and he's selling it as Dragon's Fire. Did he send you the first pic? that pic is Dragon's Breath and not Dragon's Fire which is a baby of the former. Attached you can see how Dragon's Fire looks like , a 6-7" bloom.
Go to ebay and mark that item with red. If you want give my name for references, do it.

Carlos
I don't know what he's doing. He's definitely conning his other customers. Thanks, julie
I tried to report the listing violation, but of all things, the link wouldn't work! Anyway, Mr. Con Man refunded my full payment (including shipping) and didn't even mention paying for the plant I got. Thanks again for all your help. julie
glad to hear that, julie.
