Hi, marilynbeth--

Thanks for posting all the pics of your garden.

Have you had pretty good luck getting them to come back this year?

Most of my asclepias tuberosas disappeared. And I had to replace my rudbeckia hirta 'prairie sun' as well.

Hi Tabasco,

Yes, they all came back. I give my Asclepias Tuberosas and Rudbeckia Hirta 'Prairie Sun' a lean, very well drained soil with plenty of 'all-purpose' sand and no fertilizer. They also get pea gravel on top (no wood mulch).

In fact, that's what I do for my Lavenders, Agastaches, Penstemons, Gaura.

Hope that helps.

Aren't you a part of the Greater Cincinnait Daylily and Hosta Club?! I am (Marilyn Grua) and I thought you were. What's your name? I don't always go to the meetings, but I joined the Summer of 1999.

Now, what is the purpose of mulching with the little stones? Does it keep the soil warm?

I think my soil is a little too rich for the rudbeckia hirta and probably some of the others and then I put down wood bark mulch, too. The rudbeckia was sold to me as an 'annual' so I wasn't too disappointed it disappeared over the winter.

I have started several 'prairie suns' from seed this year (wintersown) and they are doing well enough.

Do you have some pics of this year's garden? Maybe next week I will have some bloom color to post. Right now a lot of green is all I have.

Not so many butterflies yet, only cabbage and a swallowtail or two. I put out a piece of watermelon to see what I could attract, but so far no interest in that, either.

I will miss the next Cincinnati Hemerocallis meeting. We will be out of town. Hope to make the show on July 1, though. Perhaps we will see you there?

Hi Tabasco,

The pea gravel is to keep the plant (esp. in winter) from getting too much water and/or to keep it drier. Some plants don't want to be 'waterlogged'. That's why they want a lean, very well drained soil with coarse sand added.

I try to get some current pics tomorrow.

I've only had Cabbage white's so far. I've had 3 Swallowtail Cats on the Fennel I planted for them.

Yes, that soil is too rich for your Rudbeckia. I'm sorry it didn't make it.

Hi Tabasco,

Until I get new pics this weekend of the most current look of my flowers, you can go to............
