Help with Clematis ID?

Portland, OR(Zone 8b)

Hi all,

Does anyone have an idea which clematis this might be? I did searches both on DG and Clematis on the Web, and the closest I could find were 'Jackmanii Superba' and 'Warsaw Nike.' The problem, though, is that this one usually blooms May-June instead of late summer, and the blooms are also smaller (about 3.5 inches). I ask because although it's gorgeous, it's sprawled all over the place, with what looks like too much blooming way up at the top and not enough below. Like maybe it could use some pruning? Or something. Unfortunately, I'm well known for my black thumb and as soon as I saw the confusing range of instructions out there for pruning clematis, my first thought was uh-oh.

Any help would be much appreciated!

This is of my Jackmanii Superba, it's been blooming for a couple of weeks now and the blooms are about the same size as yours. The prunning is quite simple, I cut mine back to about 6 inches off the ground in early spring. It grows and blooms great.

Thanks, gldandrews! That looks exactly the same. It's hard to tell with some of the photos of Superba I found around the web because the number of petals seems to vary from 4-6, and most blooms are bigger. Maybe mine simply needs more love and attention : ) I'm new at this -- new homeowner, new gardening addiction, new DG member -- so I've got a lot to learn.

I *did* find another possible candidate ('Etoile Violette') but it's in the same category as the Superba, so either way it's spring pruning...

What a beautiful Clematis bloom you have & welcome to the Vine Forum!

Hi Calvin! A warm welcome to you also.

Gary, Calvin and Shirley, thanks for the warm welcome. Since I've got so much learning and planning to do, I imagine I'll be here quite a bit. And Calvin, if I could figure out how to successfully start a Clematis from a cutting, I'd gladly send you one.

That looks a lot like my Warsaw Nike, which is done blooming. It tends to sprawl versus climb. I'll see if I can get a good picture of a seed head tomorrow.

I just planted a Superba this year. It hasn't bloomed yet, but I noticed yesterday it has a lot of buds. I'm looking forward to seeing it look like yours, Laura, if that's what you have. It's beautiful! Yours too, Gary. How long have you had yours?

I planted mine with Wine and Roses morning glories just in case it didn't bloom this year. They seem to be sharing the pot just fine!
