Glasshouse Works - I don't know if this would work or not..

Barboursville, WV(Zone 6a)

BUT .. I just found out that they are only 2 hours away from me HAHA ..I think I actually started drooling.

If things work out like I hope, I might drive up there this afternoon to LOOK..and then go back NEXT friday and buy ..

So my question is this...if anyone wanted anything from there would I be able to coordinate a list by next friday (the 23rd)?
And, actually, would it be cheaper for me to get it and ship to whoever than to order from them and them have them do the shipping?

I don't even know if it would save anyone money.

Just a thought.

I'd be happy to pick anyone up anything next friday...

Long Beach, CA

What a kind offer. I'm good for now, but thanks for asking.
Be sure to let us know what you see this afternoon if you go.
How fun for obsessed hoya nuts like us to go to a place like that.

I'm taking my camera LOL

Just wish I had a knowledgeable person to go with me cuz I have no clue what I'm looking at HAHA..

I'm just gonna go see what I can see

Sounds like a blast!
And speaking as someone with no knowledge who went to a cool place, You will have a GREAT time :)

Oh, you lucky ducky!

You would definitely save money (except of the gas, I guess) as the plants 'in-house' are usually less expensive than they are in the catalog or on-line.

How very nice of you to offer to pick up for others.....hope that doesn't become an 'overwhelming task', though.....I'm betting that's quite a large place, too.....just look at the list they have online....it's mind-boggling!!

Wish I could go!

Barboursville, WV(Zone 6a)

well...i'm usually pretty organized LOL .. so I would hope I can work it out and help people out..people have sure been nice to me and if i'm gonna buy 1 plant, i might as well buy a LOT hahaha

i'll check in later tonight and tell ya what it was like!

I just called for directions and asked them if they really had all those plants that are on their website right there and she said

"this time of year we sell out of a lot, but yes, pretty much all of it is here. plus, they have the larger selection of things that cant go on the website cuz it can't be shipped!!!"

I just hope they let me take pictures.

What I"m MOST excited about is seeing flowers on a hoya..i hope! Ive never seen one

Oh i may just pass out!

Be back later tonight!

Mesa, AZ(Zone 9a)

Hummm crazy I may just take you up on your offer. I need to check out their website:-). Be safe and have loads of fun!

If their plants are too large to ship...maybe they would sell you cuttings since you ARE there and a 'bird in the hand is worth two in the bush' Eh?

Philomath, OR

crazy4, I am searching for Onychioides. They have a photo on their web page but I am having trouble finding individual pricing. I am running late and will look more later. If you don't get too overwhelmed with orders, I would be interested. Thank you for the kind offer, even if it doesn't work out! -joanne

Just ignore this, I looked and found it is Macgillivrayi not Onychioides. My bad. I am begining to wonder if someone is telling me "slow down, you have enough hoya at this time..." Oh, I hope not! -joanne

Ok..I'm back .. I gotta figure out how I feel about this whole thing.. very mixed emotions..so this post may be choppy lol

First off .. my friend went with me and she was "on call" to work at the mall.. she called and they told her they wouldn't need her...that was good, so we thought ..

I don't know exactly what I was expecting and I think I got my hopes too high ..I think I was expecting to walk into several green houses with rows and rows of tables and look at what I wanted..it wasn't anyting like that..

They had a small building and gardens out back of it.. tables with succulents .. tables with EE this and that everywhere but no "order" to it.. I mean, at least not for me...I am SURE it would have helped to have someone with me who knows way more than I do .. I took a list with me though of exactly what I wanted and was looking for.

I found someone to talk to and she took me to the 2 green houses where the succulents/cacti/tropicals were located and showed me the "boundries" of where I could go ..

She pointed out 3 other houses around the corner and said they had gardens at all those houses I could walk through as well, which I thought was pretty cool.

Then she pointed out the "shipping house"..said that is where most of their stuff was but even she wasn't allowed in there because of fungus being brought it and things..I understood that..she said she'd go find the owner and he'd come help me...

He eventually came to talk to me and WOW what a help he was.. in the mean time (remember my friend?) well, her work called and said she had to come in.. that really stopped my visit short..I was probably only there about 25 minutes and needed way more time than that...(it took 2 hours to get there lol)

I showed the owner my list and like I said he was SO helpful.. I told him I was mainly looking for swiss cheese philo, pink princess philo, staghorn fern, hoyas, and Ceropegia. He had all of those.

He told me that someone should have told me on the phone that most of those things are in the shipping house and not out to be looked at. He said he could pull them out but it was too hot to go in there right then. (although someone went in and got a couple things anyway)

I gave him my list and he said if I would come back next Friday and give him at least an hour, he would have all my things pulled. He also said he would find me 3 "rarer" hoyas and go ahead and have them rooting for me when I came back .

I then asked him about the mother of thousands "pink teeth".. they do not have them ready to be picked up.. when someone orders them, the start a plant for them.. even by next week, he doubts it would be ready to go but I told him I wanted it anyway...he said that they require much more light and are harder to take care of and many people are killing them and then complaining so they only make starts when one is ordered and they explain to them it really needs to be in bright light or a green house.

So..all in all.... I was disappointed a little..then again, I didn't get to spend much time there..and even less time once the owner came and started talking to me...again, he was WONDERFUL ... if I would have had someone with me who knew a lot about plants, I am sure they would have recognized a lot more than me...I think I was just a little overwhelmed in the green house because things weren't marked and I didn't know what they were..

They DO have a ton of stuff..wow ... I guess a lot of it just isn't available to the public to see... they had GORGEOUS pink princess philos..

Their prices are a little cheaper in person too ...I have quite a few pictures that I'll show you...

I'm still going back next Friday though and I plan to spend a lot more time.. it was REALLY nice to see some flowers and plants for the first time that I had only seen on the Internet ..there is no place around here that I can see these in person ..and I did see my first real hoya bloom YAY

ok .. So here's my first picture

Euphorbia Obesa ..it was the only "round" one there..the others looked oblong

On the UPSIDE.. I didn't walk out empty handed LOL ...

It seems to me that I remember H. Philippine Black was his name for H. pubicalyx 'Royal Hawaiian Purple' (the correct name). Looks like you really made a haul.

Funny about not letting people in a certain house because of fungus...fungi are all over...what do they do about their shipping materials? Wierd.

Congratulations. Will go and look at your photos. Thanks...

Carol

Barboursville, WV(Zone 6a)

Thanks for that info Carol ...

I've made a list of the hoyas I have now and I'm trying to find info on each one so I know where and how to grow them and if they all get the same light/water etc .. makes it easier if I have the right name :)

I thought it was pretty for 5 dollars

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

It is a beautiful H. pubicalyx! This is the one that also can produce 'multicolored' blooms...where part of the flower can be almost white and another part purple and another part pink....really cool. This, I find, usually happens in high heat.....

You will love your H. pubicalyx. Did he tell you that they can tolerate lower light and cooler temps... ?

Carol

Barboursville, WV(Zone 6a)

Carol,

I asked him about light and he said "part shade" ..but didn't mention the cooler temps..which is great though!

Thanks!

Vero Beach, FL(Zone 9b)

Oh sweetie! You should ahve got with me! I could have sent you all the swiss cheese philo you wanted and a slip of pink princess :)
Loving Philippine Black and it does look like my royal purple

I love your find though

I have this mother of thousands....if you want some..not the same but pretty none the less :)

Ouuuu...what is that lovely plant in the foreground? Looks like some king of variegated Aloe or Agave or something.
