Hello everyone
I was looking at all of the forums and seen this one about butterflys, and i was hopeing someone could tell me what
this butterfly is called? I took this pic of it yesterday on my gerriaums. Thought he was soooo pretty. I had thought maybe a swallowtail of some sort?
Thanks in advanced :)
Becky
Does anyone know what kind of butterfly this might be?
Looks like a Pale Tiger Swallowtail
Or maybe a Two-tailed Tiger Swallowtail
I think a two-tailed Tiger Swallowtail also
I hadn't seen the extra tails on the first look. But I had just happened to have my field guide sitting here with me, as I was trying to ID a butterfly that was in my yard, as well :)
Hello Poo,Donna
Thanks so much! I enjoyed this butterfly the short time he was here. He even let me get really close too which kinda surprized me. Sure wished it would of stayed around longer.
My next trip ,think im going to get me something just for the butterflys. Any sugestions?
Thanks again~
Becky
As in??? Plants?
Purple Liatris and Purple Coneflowers are favorite as well as Red Pentas, rotten/over ripe fruits like figs and bananas
host plants are various Cherry, Ash and Common Hop Tree. Cats fold themselves up in the leaves for protection while feeding
It DOES look like a Two-tailed Tiger Swallowtail! Here in Texas they use Hop Tree quite often as a host plant. The caterpillars take much longer to raise than other species I've raised. http://community.webshots.com/photo/433516709/1458685376041712789HOEqKN
wow what a beautiful cat Linda.

Ooooo, beautiful! And two-tailed! I don't know that I've ever seen a pic of one of these. If I have, I was unaware that it was different. I'll have to do some research on them. Thanks for sharing!
Your more than welcome Konk
I thought it was just beautiful ~
Parsley, they will lay their eggs on parsley.
A beautiful shot of a lovely flutterbye, wild_willow.
Along with a bit of a (late) big ol 'hearty' welcome to DG, to ya!

Black Swallowtail's use parlsey (carrot family plants) as a host plant but Tiger's use trees: willow, tulip tree, black cherry, aspen, sweet bay, poplars. This is why I don't have any Tiger cats because I don't have enough room to grow trees for them.
Goo day to everyone
Sorry it has taken me a bit to reply.
Thanks so much May :)
I just seen another swallowtail and this one didn't have the two tails? and the blue and orange on it?
We have tons of willows going along the creek. Maybe this is why im seeing them then.
They could of been here for a long time ,just now have noticed them though.
There is also alot of wild cheery trees across the creek too. Which is just 100 feet from my backyard fence.
Wished i had planted some carrorts this year then :( Thanks Kon for the info too.
Maybe next year.
Have a great day all~
Becky
You are so lucky to have the trees around you! Now that you are noticing you'll probably see them a lot more often. Keep your camera handy and share some more pics!
