New Blooms

Edison, NJ(Zone 7a)

I brought a few of my AVs into work recently, and they seem to love their new location. My office window faces East, so they get lots of natural light in the morning. They're so pretty, I thought I would share some pictures.

This first one is one of the Russian AVs - EkZharPtitza (Firebird). I've only had it about three weeks, and this is its first bloom with me.

Thanks for looking,

Stephanie

What a lovely bloom! That edge on the petals is just WOW. The AVs I grew in HS were in an east facing window.... I think that may just be the kind of natural light that they love best!

Silver Spring, MD

Very beautiful. I love the edging, too.

Sorry for the delay. I'm at work, and had to step away from my desk to help someone with something.

This next one is Nortex Snowfrill Haven. There was a bit too much light to get a really good picture, but the blossoms are a pure snow white.

And the last one for today is a pretty noid I found at the grocery store. The picture shows the blossoms as bluish, but they are actually a dark lavender with white edging. And it was only 1.99!

EkZharPtitza (Firebird) has a few more bloom stalks that are just starting to grow. The picture really doesn't do the bloom justice, though. It's a much darker pink, and closer to the color of the one on Bluebird's website, which is where I purchased the plant from.

My AVs at home, or as many as I can fit without overcrowding, are in my kitchen/dining area windows. These face east, too.

A couple of the AVs I bought from the Central Jersey AVSA show and sale are starting to bloom again. If they do well, I'll take some pics of those, too.

Thanks for looking,

Stephanie

How do you do those wonderful pictures where you have the whole plants then a square to the left with the flower ?

Andalusia, AL(Zone 8b)

Beautiful! Firebird is awesome.

Thats pretty cool how you did the picture of your beautiful NOID.How do you do that?

Silver Spring, MD

I agree with everything. blooms, pictures. Very lovely. How did you do that?

Edison, NJ(Zone 7a)

How did I do it? It's pretty easy, really, using Paint Shop Pro. I start with two pictures, one of the whole plant, and one zoomed in. I just add a border or frame around the zoomed in pic, make it a bit smaller, then copy and past into the larger picture and export the whole thing as a .jpg image.

I'm glad you liked the pictures. It's funny... I've been around AVs my whole life (my mother and grandmother both had tons of them), but didn't get interested until just a few months ago. Now I get such a thrill when I get a new plant, or when one of them starts blooming!

I love seeing pictures of everyone else's plants, too, whether they are AVs or not. Everyone has such beautiful plants and pots to display them in.

Me too ! I wish I had paint shop program

Andalusia, AL(Zone 8b)

Stephanie Is Paint shop pro 8 the same program you have or will it work the same?

Allison You have d-mail from me:)

Edison, NJ(Zone 7a)

Jannich, I have versions PSP 8 and 9. I've used version 8 for the last few years, but for some reason, it doesn't work now on two of my computers. So I went ahead and got version 9, which seems to be much more stable. The pictures I posted were done in v. 9, but everything I did can also be done in version 8.

If anyone uses PSP and wants a little tutorial on how I did the picture in picture, Dmail me.

Melissa, I'm glad you liked the pictures. And I bet you *can* do address labels. Have you tried the free software download from Avery? I even have my 70-something year old mother using it. She makes address labels for herself and her friends, and all sorts of other labels.

As for Paint Shop Pro - I bought both versions I have through Ebay. You just have to be careful that they are true, full versions, and not pirated copies. You should be able to get PSP 8 for about $30-40. I did a quick search and found one, brand new in Jasc packaging for $26.95. Check out item number 7248568961, for an example.

Stephanie,Could you post the link to the directions for paint shop here please whenever you get it done.No hurry.Have a good weekend!

Edison, NJ(Zone 7a)

I'll work on the tutorial this weekend, and at least make a good start on it. It'll give me a chance to take a break from the baby blanket I'm crocheting for one of the women here at work.

I love the Russian's, too. I have three so far, and all came from Bluebird:

Barkhatnaia Fantaziia (Velvet Fantasy)
Ek-Zhar Ptitza (Firebird)
Rozovyi Zhemchug (Pink Pearl)

If I remember correctly, I think my Pink Pearl is going to be blooming soon, so I may post a picture of that, along with a few others. I think I already posted a picture of my Velvet Fantasy in bloom on another thread. Don't want to post too many pictures and make a pest of myself.

:-D

I finally finished the Paint Shop Pro tutorial, and was able to post it to one of my websites. I tried to make it as detailed and simple as possible, so PSP beginners should be able to follow it easily. The tutorial can be found at:

http://home.earthlink.net/~dragonzgold2/index.htm

I used photos of my blooming Rozovyi Zhemchug (Pink Pearl) for the tutorial. Here's my finished photo of the plant.

I love the Russian AVs, too. I have my eye on these from Bluebird's site:

Belye Nochi (White Nights)
Ek-Snezhnyi Bars (Snow Leopard )
Kofeiniy Aromat (Coffee Aroma)
Lubimaia Dochka (Beloved Daughter),
Ozornye Volki (Playful Wolves)

I'm going to order some pots from Bluebird, so I am trying to decide if I should order any AVs too.

Hmmm. Decisions, decisions...
