Speaking of 'poopies'

Marysville, WA(Zone 7a)

This corner of the yard re-seeds yearly and there are usually some nice natural crosses.

BALV,
OMGosh, you got ALL the colors!! I feel cheated!! WHERE are you up thataway?? You live right in town??

Marysville, WA(Zone 7a)

Nah Blue, we live "out in the country" surrounded by tickey-tackey houses where there used to be strawberry fields, a huge Indian Casino, 100 store Outlet Mall, and the ubiquitous Wall-Mart. (thank you County Assessor) I'm sad, so far there hasn't been a single white, and last year I had both single and double whites. Maybe later ?

BALV,
Ohhh, out on the Boeing property. Offa 116th?? I forgot what we used to call it. Stimsons crossing?? Or out farther by Midway??

What kind of poppies are those?

Thanks,

P somniferum, my favorite of the 250 species. Wish I could grow them all.

BALV,
Know it WELL!! My mother / brother are in that cemetary. My mother attended the catholic church across the street.

Those are beautiful. I love poppies. We used to grow Iceland poppies in Calif and I miss having those. The only poppies I have in this yard are the orange Calif poppies and those were volunteers. Unfortunately, they volunteered in the pastel garden and not in the yellow/orange/white garden where they would have been outstanding!

Wow, Your Poppies are gorgeous. I've heard you have a great nursery up there. Is that where you got them? :)Donna

Marysville, WA(Zone 7a)

Donna, I don't know where the seed came from anymore, an extended 'senior moment'. They have been cross pollinating and self seeding in the same area for several years. The beautiful part is that every year there is something a little different on a couple of the plants. There are a couple pretty neat nurseries around here. Sunnyside, and The Plant Farm out by Smokey Point..

Select Seeds-Antique Flowers has a somniferum called Heirloom that looks like those and several others that I covet as well.

Seymours has somniferums too.

Balv-Let me know if you recall how you got them started in the first place. I haven't had much luck with poppies from seed and I think I must have the timing off and/or get the seedlings muddled with our endless weed crop and yank them before I can tell what they are.

Gwen- Icelandic's should work here. I didn't raise them myself, but I have some I bought in pots and they are flowering nicely. They haven't exactly exploded in size, but not much has so far this season.

Marysville, WA(Zone 7a)

Kyra, that's the easy part. I just tossed them on the ground where I wanted them to grow, then kept shaking out some seeds when they ripened. The self-sown and Fall/Winter sown always did better than Spring sown.

Kyra, poppies were one of my few success stories from winter sowing this year. I made a lot of mistakes my first year but the poppies forgave me! LOL

Langley, WA(Zone 7b)

Balvenie, bring some of those seeds to the plant exchange! You can watch us fight over them. ;)

GWEN,
LOL re: fighting over at plant exchange.

Hey how come your poppies are blooming already and mine aren't? Those are great! I love the annual poppies. Mine are not even budded out yet.
Gwen, I'm sure I'll have plenty of seed, too. One poppy head has thousands of seeds in it. But it's best to let it dry on the plant.
