My Texas Star finally bloomed !

San Marcos, Tx, TX(Zone 8b)

But I thought these were supposed to be small flowers. I was given some seeds last year, and got one small plant that died back during the winter. This year, suddenly I have an almost five-foot tall plant still growing in the same pot, this first HUGE bloom, and four more buds at the top! I've had to hide the plant in my back yard, though. Some of our local policemen have mistaken these for marijuana plants, LOL.

I understand about hiding it! My husband thinks the same thing. You can expect a big hibby with big flowers! beautiful blossom!

Wow that is one awesome bloom. I think I might need one of those. How hot and cold tolerant are they?

Red Oak, NC(Zone 7b)

Pretty tolerant. Last summer it was about mid 90s alot. I left it in a pot outside all winter and I came back from roots this year.

I might just have to try it with some afternoon shade. It was 110-113 here yesterday.

Hi, marieortiz, and everybody...

I have had to water mine almost every day, because it will kinda droop when it needs water, and it is in a pot. But it's been pretty warm here--high 80's already, with 60--70% humidity most days.
I measured the bloom that opened today. Almost 8 inches across! Does anyone know whether pinching off the top after these buds bloom will cause it to develop some side branches?

Midway, TX(Zone 8b)

I have five that are in full sun. They wilt down so bad in this heat even though they get plenty of water. I plan to move them where they get some shade. I have one huge beautiful bloom today. I think they will do much better with some shade. Lin

Hey Texans, don't forget this lovely Hibiscus is native to Florida, too.

Midway, TX(Zone 8b)

Yes I have a friend from Fla that has lots of Texas Star Hibiscus.

The Woodlands, TX(Zone 8b)

Boi946 - that's huge! I worry about being arrested having a Vitex, it REALLY looks illegal. My neighbor thought my bamboo in a pot, on the porch, was marijuana, can you believe it? He would definitely place a 911 call if he saw the vitex.

Long Beach, CA

Is that one of the "tropical hibiscus", or one that goes dormate in winter?

Midway, TX(Zone 8b)

Mine go dormant in winter here in our zone 8b. But they come back out with a bang in spring.

Hey you people in Fla with this hibiscus. I would love to have some seed. I have never seen any of these in the stores. Thanks Fran

Great looking flower! I've been growing this species of Hibiscus(Hibiscus coccineus) for several years and I love them. They do like wet soils and do droop a bit in full sun whenever the soil dries out even a little bit. They are a perennial species which dies back in the winter.

Also, I find this quite funny. I've never heard of this Hibiscus being called Texas Star until I saw them in a nursery in Texas! The usual common name for this one is Scarlet Rose Mallow or Scarlet Hibiscus. It seems a lot of usual common names were changed to include the word "Texas" in them in nurseries in Texas. This one is even funnier because "Texas Star" isn't even native to Texas! LOL

(no offense Texans! hehe)

Boi, if you haven't done so, could I suggest you post this photo in the plant files section for this plant? The photo is gorgeous.

beautiful. I love the Texas Red Star Hibiscus. Mine might bloom if I can keep DH and the mower away from it

Magnolia, TX(Zone 8b)

Have you seen the white Texas Star? It does a trick to your eyes! You have to touch it b4 you will really believe it is not just plastic, especially in the center. I have never seen a growing flower that looks so fake!
