Hello Everyone..

Champaign, IL(Zone 5b)

Greetings Everyone.

My wife and I are hard at work transforming our yard into something special for us. Alot of low maintiance plants for her.. yesterday she actually was complaining that they were too low maintance. And for me, well I am trying to bring a little bit of the south up north. I really am not homesick, but sure am looking foward to getting blackberries in the ground next year. This year we have planted strawberries, fought with a black walnut for control of our yard, and started varigated virginia creeper and boston ivy on opposite ends of the house.

Next year is our year of vines, berries and shurbs.. but we tend to change plans daily so other the a long range vision of were we are headed nothing is ever set in stone.

Welcome from the land of blackberries beside the road land. What part of the south are you from. I have a nephew and he was doing some research on his ancestors, Calhoun, and I believe he told me Colquhoun was one of the spellings he found I believe from Scotland.
Seems like looking at your post that you have started you are finding your way around. Glad to have you with us.

Yes Colquhoun is the orginal clan spelling.. I am a Calhoun :) my family is out of Edgecombe County, NC.. coming to Western Kentucky in the 1790s to settle revolution land grants. I sure do miss the land of blackberries by the side of the road. My neighbor is orginally from LA and has a magnolia.. were are putting the bed of blackberries smuckdab on the properity line.. going to build a little bit of dixie up here.

Most of the Colquhouns that are spelled Calhoun are descented from William Colquhoun.. brought to the new world during the english civil war, in chains.. his childern and their childern moved south.. and now there are more Colquhouns in the United States then Scotland.

Small world. I bet you never thought someone would post about the name and have known that info. My sister was married to a Calhoun and they had children before divorcing and she has passed on but one of the nephews and I are close and he got to doing research and really found a lot. As a matter of fact his sister went to Scotland in search of family history. I assume the LA is lower Alabama. Good luck with the blackberries.

A great big welcome from New Mexico. I've been enjoying your posts in another forum very very much :-]

I'm kinda new here too. Only been gardening a couple of years. Never had the space for it. Since June 2004 I have put in 284 plants or shrubs. Hubby told me one more plant brought in here this summer I will be cremated sooner than later. That gives me til end of Sept. beginning of Oct. Then I can plant bulbs. They're not leafy blooming stems per say. yet.......... I'll be safe. I buy and plant while he's at work. He'll never know... So I thought. He counts the newest bed to see if any are added.
He's just joking, really. He knows I've found a passion and caught a disease for which there is no cure. HAPPY GARDENING to all Have a wonderful day. I must go I have 150 people copming at 1:00. Guess I really should vacumn to say the least. and make sure all the food I planned is ready. Wouldn't that be awful? All those people and nothing cooked? I'm scaring myself. Bye all

Tulips, grape hyacinths, daffs, allium, you name it. Survived Saturday even through sprinkles. Had a good time too, I think. A little too much of JD. Only about 50 actually showed up All family seeing a hubby is the oldest of 13 and I am the oldest of a mere 6. Pouring outside now so I can clean inside and what do I do? I'm down here watching threads instead of doing the smart thing. Nah, this is much more fun watching. Take care everyone and Happy Monday.
