How lucky am I that one of our local nurseries specializes in tropicals! I lost all ability to say no and brought home several plants that I don't even know the names of. Could someone please tell me what type of banana this is in the front. I also have a traveler's palm, several birds of paradise, some dancing ladies (globba red leaf), broms, and cordylines. Any info you can share would be appreciated. :o))
Please ID this beautiful banana
I'm embarrassed to admit it, but the pot was labeled. I just found the sticker that says Ensete superba 'kluay pa.' I haven't been able to find it in the plant files. Any suggestions? I can take a better picture if need be. thanks :o))
Ah. I havent tried that one yet. I will wait and see how yours does.
Try this.

that's it!! thanks for finding it for me. i'll keep you posted on the progress :o)) i have a small chinese banana. when it gets bigger, should i expect it to look like this one? you might be able to see it better in this pic. i haven't potted it yet because i'm a little scared to do it. i really don't want to kill this one. is your chinese banana in the ground or pot?
Mine is in a pot. I have one in the ground and the one in a pot is doing much better.
Now that I see the whole picture of yours, it does look different.
I love my chinese. I might have to get me one like you have though. It looks neat.
i've been watching this plant for weeks and finally just had to buy it. do you bring your chinese inside in the winter?
Nice collection Ashley,
What are the striped bromiliad type in the front.
I also investigated that chinese yellow banana after somebody recently posted looking for info. I like the fact that it remains small. Going to the mainland this weekend
Will be visiting toptropicals.com always trouble for me
We also have the same taste in door mat LOL
Ashley, I did bring mine in for two nights when the weather dropped down into the 20s overnight. Otherwise, it stayed outside. Took a little leaf damage one night , but otherwise was fine. I have 26 pups around it right now!!!!
celt, i'm so jealous...you are driving distance from top tropicals! that could be dangerous. the shape and growing pattern of the banana is what sold me on it. i would really like to make it a centerpiece in the yard, just haven't figured out how yet...it's leaves branch out pretty far and take up a lot of room. (i've already got two new leaves since i brought it home monday.) the bromeliad is a black mystic. i thought they were so cool looking...zebra-like stripes. and it looks really good with bright pink.
rylaff, 26 pups!! that's one fertile mama! i saw the pictures of your bloom and it's what made me get one, but do you have a picture of the whole tree?
I am sure I do. I am at work right now but will post when I get home. (Dont tell my boss I am posting this from work. Ooops, I am the boss).
Yellow lotus bananas (Musella lasiocarpa) are prolific offset-producers...... I got two from Plant Delights Nursery, both of which were 1 gallon size plants and they already had at least 3 pups each starting! Probably explains why Tony was selling them for less than what he was charging for the Japanese Hardy Banana (Musa basjoo).
And to answer the question you are probably going to ask, yes, my Yellow lotus banana is in the ground and it's not coming out.... I'm going to have to bury it under a pile of leaves after the first really hard freeze we have, but with just that amount of protection, it will overwinter in zone 6.... at least according to several reliable sources.
that's a really nice banana! thanks for the pics rylaff. it's nice to have an idea of what to expect. how old is that plant? mine only has one pup, doesn't like full sun and seems to be growing really slow???
Hmm. I bought it last year. I have one in the ground, doing so so. And this one in the pot, doing great. It gets full sun most of the day. I water it every day.
The one I have in the ground is doing great (it's on a slope above a natural seep, so the soil where I planted it stays consistently moist without being wet), and has been growing like crazy.... Well, at least once the temps got above 80 degrees, anyways.... During most of May, it grew very slowly due to daytime temps in the 60's and nighttime temps in the 40's......
Mine gets full sun from around 9 AM - 1PM, and light dappled shade the rest of the day. I have a pic of it in the Northeast gardening forum under the "What's Growing Part 2" thread.
