A notha nanner question

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

A friend just called me with a nanner question and my brain must be fried because I couldn't think of a good answer.

She bought two fruiting (mystery variety) bananas in 7 gallon pots. One of them had 3 good sized stalks and one tiny pup. the other had only one large stalk but many, many pups. Which would be the better plant? She wants to give the better one as a gift and keep the other.

I don't know enough about bananas to make a good call on this. What do you think? Thanks, a

I'm interested to see what other people have to say about this. My first inclination would be the one with the three large stalks is the most robust. Any kind of corm damage can produce lots of pups, so without seeing it it's hard to say whether this really indicates a stronger plant cluster.

Personally, I'm a believer in the three stalk system - one large and mature, one large immature pup, and one small new pup, per plant. More pups than that won't be able to all grow in one spot (too crowded) and I don't want all of the energy of the main plant going into pup production anyway.
