seedlings just keep growing

DC metro, VA(Zone 7b)

even if I'm not home..... These are photos of some seedlings in a sweater box.

The flower is Sinningia Little Venus, which I put in there to recuperate.... Most of the other things in this one are sinningias or sinningia seedlings.

clearly I went a little crazy.... These are more gessies - more sinningias, and some episcia, eucodonia, gloxinia (not florist's, but a gloxinia species) and who knows what else.....

KR~ What a beautiful group of babies!! I was growing some AVs by seed until my sweet husband put vinegar in my spritzer and I used it on the little tiny seedlings. *croak* The funny thing is all the while I am spraying them I'm thinking, hmmm...something kinda smells like vinegar... ~lol~

Oh well, time to try again soon. Did you buy the seeds, collect, or trade for them?? They look great!

DC metro, VA(Zone 7b)

LOL at the vinegar! What did he add it for?

Most of the seeds are from The Gesneriad Society fund, the Gesneriad Hybridizing Association, and Chiltern's.

He was moving some stuff upstairs and the carpet smelled like cat pee...yuk. So he just grabbed a bottle that was handy. Yeah, it was handy, it was right on my plant stand ~lol~

And I must add, in my cats' defense...our house's carpets upstairs reeked of pee when we bought it a year or so ago. We've ripped the worst out, but I guess there is another room to do...gross.

Hey MsC

Good to hear from you!

Hey Ki. The only seed experience I had was the ones you shared and I believe the already stated word is "croak". You have done wonderfully. AND there are so many of them. Way to go.

Silver Spring, MD

The sinninga is beautiful. Hadn't thought of a sweater box. Great idea. I have been using Costco cookies containers because of the heights but a sweater box would give even more.

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Ki you are amazing all those cute babies. WOW my eyes are so excited they can't believe this how wonderous and to come home to all these babies so exciting !
And Little Venus, just the prettiest and cutest plant . pretty flower ! Love it.
Great growing as alway !

Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

Way cool Key! I put down my glox seeds yesterday. Keeping fingers crossed. Some were the Charles Lawn mix and others were noid.

My c. tamiana seeds that you sent me never came up =(

But as you know, my streps did! They're doing great! Keep your photos coming so we can watch their progress!! YEA!!

Hi Key!

I got some episcia seeds from the genesriad society last week. Will be planting it anytime.

Do they take long to germinate?

DC metro, VA(Zone 7b)

PMcP - lol. your cat is lucky, with you to defend it, lol.

nanna - give seeds another try sometime. Once you find a setup that works, there is really no effort involved (other than sowing them and leaving them alone). I can always send more seeds.

Lali - I can't believe the strep seeds germinated but the tamianas didn't! They are such weeds ;-)

Sp in GA - if the seeds are fresh, they should germinate quickly. Be sure to space them out a bit. If you have enough seeds to sow two batches, perhaps you can keep some in the fridge - I wrecked my first batch of episcia seeds...... I find they like to have high humidity after germination for longer than other gessies, so keep them enclosed for longer. Good luck! And, oh yes, they don't show their true colors for quite some time, so if they look boring at first, give them time :-)

I think I will try again. I have much better luck with this last set of leaves. I used a cap mat and humidity dome. Worked great and very little effort. Constant environment really helps, I think.

Andalusia, AL(Zone 8b)

Oh my goodness Key,So many wonderful babies! I tryed your seeds also.No luck hear.
What in the world are you going to do with them all?

Lilburn, GA

thank you for the tips, Key.

Unfortunatley, they sent me very little seeds. Nearly nothing. I will keep you informed of their progress.

DC metro, VA(Zone 7b)

what will I do with them all? I'll probably have things to trade later this year :-)

Halifax County, Canada

Oh my goodness! Your one lucky girl! Do you know of any sources for seeds for gesneriads and epicias or cuttings? Thanks Rosa

Lilburn, GA

Hi Amanda,

I know that the Gesneriad Society has seed lists for its members.

Have you checked the AV forum plant sources? You may find a nursery from Canada.

Where is Keyring???

Lilburn, GA

I have checked the "source for plants" at the top of the Av forum and there are some canadian nurseries listed there. Good luck!
