DH decided last fall to reclaim a flower bed that had been allowed to grass over by the previous owners and, in doing so, found this guy up next to the Indian hawthorn. He tried to pull it, but I told him not to. It's been more or less like this photo since then. Tonight I was weeding the bed and I found two of these leaves popping up about 8" from the plant. I tried to pull one and it snapped off. I left the other one as is.
Anyone know what this is and whether I should be getting rid of it?
Many thanks!
Help what's this?
Hard to tell, but I have a Ledebouria (squill) that looks similar. Here's the link:

that sure looks like my mystery plant

I pulled one of my three out and decided to pot it, in the event it is not a weed and something I forgot I had planted. The poor little thing is so pitiful today, with all the heat
Hi Nery,
My plant (Squill) doesn't look like yours. The leaves are flat, and wider than what yours looks like. Does yours have stripes? But then, you are the one looking at it in person. I still think yours might be an allium....
The blue stripes in my pictures are a trick of the camera -- it's really just the texture of the leaf. Looks like I may be doing some digging tonight. It's one thing if it's just hanging out not getting much bigger, but quite another if it's multiplying.
It looks like some kind of Palm, maybe a Palmeto?
I thought it looked like a palm, too. Maybe I'll transplant it to a pot this weekend and see what happens. Since it's spreading, I don't want to leave it in the ground too long. DH was trying unsuccessfully to pull it up when I told him to leave it... the last thing I need is something that spreads and can't be gotten rid of. At least it's pretty small.
frostweed, I think you nailed it. http://davesgarden.com/pf/showimage/29633/
Nery, is that what yours looks like?
Well, what do you know, what tipped me off was the ridges on the leaf.
Y'know, I have to wonder....We have a palmetto that is native to this area (I think) and it grows in areas that are (or at least in the past have) been wet. It's kind of an indicator plant. If you're buying a new home, for example, you kind of check it out closely if palmetto grows in the yard. I don't know which palmetto it is though.
You know, I kind of wondered if it might be a palmetto. Some are always growing in my side yard, between the house and the street (I've been told this used to be a swamp. Great!) I was just looking for a picture, apparently I've never taken one - don't particularly care for them, but I've been trying to re-think that. I'll try to take a picture tomorrow.
no, not palmetto. mine don't have ridges.
