Yucca plant winterizing

Windsor, QC(Zone 4b)

During the bi-annual plant exchange organised by Horticulture Society in my region (Southern Quebec) I traded for a Yucca plant which I think is of the Weeping variety. This year is its second summer in my garden. I am hoping to see it flower this year.

My question is about winterizing the plant. The books I read suggest that the leaves be tied together and not much else. I question this practise however. Why tie them. When the ropes are removed in mid-spring the leaves are soft and tend to just lie there on the ground. Only a very scarse few pick themselves up off of the ground to point skyward. the new growth springs from the center of the plant.

What would happen to the plant if I didn't do this.

Hi
I have a Yucca and I don't do anything to it other than cover it with snow. I got one because my Mom has one and after 8 years it flowered and was fabulous!. She lives in Calgary and leaves it to its own devices. As mine grows it isn't quite the same type as my Mom's but is still interesting and it hasn't flowered yet but I have only had it for 3 years. I haven't noticed that it droops at all for the winter.
Good luck in your search for further info.

Mine stay out all year, but I really don't have to worry the same way you do about the winters. Sorry, no help here.

I have a Yucca..and I don't do anything to protect it during the winter.
I have had it growing in its spot for about 6 years It bloomed once in 2002..and then not again.
But....it has four big buds coming and it should be gorgeous this year.
This is a pic from 2002...just one bloom then.

I have three Yuccas in one of my garden beds that my DSIL gave to me out of her own gardens in 2004. I take no special precautions with them, and we get a lot of snow (we're to the lee of Lake Huron) and cold blustery weather in the winter. This year two of them are sending up flower spikes :-)
