First...Is the devil's backbone listed here

http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/1716/index.html

actually a cactus? I was told yes and was told no.

Then I was told that Devil's Backbone and Ric Rac cactus are the same thing, and from looking at pictures here, I can't see how that is possible.

Would anyone have any cuttings of either one of these?

Thanks for the info!

Devil's Backbone is a common name for several plants, so the answer there is yes it is a cactus if applied to some species and no if applied to others. Sort of like some people call catterpillars 'cats', Catherines can be Cats (or Kats) and then there are cattails. depending on which one you mean, yes cats can be insects. The link you provided refers to Pedilanthus. The plants properly called Devil's Backbone in this forum are either an Epiphyllum (E. anguliger), or more commonly, Cryptocereus anthonyanus/Selenicereus anthonyanus (also commonly called Ric Rac). Then again, I have seen Epiphyllum/Selenicereus chrysocardium called
Ric Rac, but not Devil's anything. So 'round and 'round we go.

That said, it is obvious that using common names and arguing about whether it is the right name or not is pointless, all common names are correct. If somebody says that Devil's Backbone Pedilanthus is a cactus, that is incorrect. It is a succulent, but not a cactus. The other 2 (Epiphyllum and Selenicereus) are indeed cacti, both from Central America I think.

Jared, I have a well rooted Anthonyanus (rick rack) if you are interested. I think I have seen you on the Hoya Forum. Am I right or just way off base? I would love to trade for hoya! Regardless, if you want it, the Anthonyanus is yours. let me know! -joanne
