I have several varieties of "rabbiteye" blueberries which I planted based on the recommendation of our local cooperative extension service that they are the best type for my area. The shrubs are about 3 years old and starting to bear well. I read an article in a (grocery related) magazine that rabbiteyes are inferior in size and taste. Just what are rabbiteyes; they are still the same species, right? Is it true that other types don't grow well in the hot and humid south? I am an enthusiastic, but not very experienced gardener and want to know the facts on this topic and in using a search engine I am overwhelmed with information when I type in "rabbiteye blueberries".
Difference between rabbiteye blueberries and others?
I grow more rabbiteyes, than anything else. I find them superior in growth, yield and taste to the the southern high bush, which is the only alternative for this area. Some of the nothern types may be bigger, but I have not noticed any superior taste. Of course, that judgement is based primarily on Grocery store berries.
Thanks, Farmerdill! I think the grocery is just trying to drum up business for the type of berries it is selling. I have been pleased with the berries my bushes have yeilded so far and am so glad to hear from someone with experience that I have planted the right kind.
Taste is variable and subjective.
I have some rabbiteyes that are not as sweet as some of the northern highbush types, but others that are just as tasty. Berry size is variable between cultivars as well - some rabbiteye types are large, others are small.
Even up here in zone 6, my rabbiteye bushes get larger - and produce WAY more berries than do the northern highbush types. So...I'm planting more and more rabbiteyes and Southern highbush types than the northern ones.
Why are they called rabbiteye? I figured the berries were small but some of mine are as big as the grocery store.
