My First Blooms

Campbell River, BC(Zone 8a)

My lacunosa is blooming. I'm so excited. I recall a couple of months ago commenting on Awanda's lovely little H. lacunosa flowers and wondering if or when my little plant might bloom. I was afraid to say anything until they actually opened in case I jinxed them. I thought they might be like my Bella which is constantly growing umbels that promptly blast. However, at this moment I even have one on that plant which looks very promising. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Such cute flowers!

I was really surprised last week to find buds on one of my other cuttings as well. Must be that time of year. The cutting hasn't grown much at all since I got it last summer but it did have an old peduncle which is where the buds are. I hope it's not a case of blooming before it dies. I think it's H. carnosa.

Gorgeous, Sandy!! Your carnosa looks pretty darned healthy, so it's probably a case of feelin' good & gettin' its bloom on.

Sandy, congrats on your bloom, doesn't she smell wonderful. Your carnosa looks promising too... :) YIPPEE

Thank you all for your kind comments and encouragement. It does smell lovely, but thanks to my darn allergies I have to put my nose right up to it to enjoy it. Don't want to jinx them but there are 3 cuttings in the lacunosa pot and the other two cuttings are starting to grow peduncles as well. Maybe if I had two blooming at the same time I could smell them from a bit of a distance. lol

I moved the carnosa because I thought maybe it was getting too much sun. The few new leaves are quite light green and have purple edges. I hope it won't affect the development of the flowers. Oh...obviously it hasn't. I just checked them and they're opening. Yippee is right....I'll have to take a picture tomorrow.

Wow..that is just a spectactular bloom!

Campbell River, BC(Zone 8a)

Thanks. I really like the fragrance from the lacunosa too. The carnosa is definitely way stronger. I could smell it last night as soon as I walked into the bathroom where it's hanging. Definitely not as nice and it makes me not feel quite as bad about having a poor sense of smell. I can't imagine what it would be like with more than one set of blooms.

I'll take a picture of the carnosa later when the light is better. It is very pretty.

Way to grow Sandy. I still haven't figured out the secret hoya method to making lacunosa a happy camper. Congrats on breaking the code!

Thank you all. I'm still thrilled and I pick up the little lacunosa pot to look at the flowers several times a day. LOl I don't know what the secret for getting the lacunosa to bloom is. I have it in my bathroom on the windowsill, which faces east. I keep it damp and I've been using rainwater to water it with. I only started fertilizing all the hoyas about two weeks ago. I didn't know when to start treating them like adult plants as opposed to cuttings.

Here's the picture of the carnosa that I promised. Is it the regular/common carnosa?

Oh Sandy she is so pretty. Your umbel will get bigger in time. It looks to be the regular carnosa. YIPPEE. As common as this hoya is, I think it is one of my favorites. But I'm not one for the smell. Congrats !!!!

Campbell River, BC(Zone 8a)

It's nice to know the umbels will get bigger Tami, although with this particular plant I'm not sure I could stand bigger or more than one at a time.

Thanks. I left the picture taking to so late in the day I had to take it outside, so that was just luck. You like it's fragrance Christine? I was just thinking that it's a good thing it is pretty....at this time of night...ugh!

Sandy

Yes, Sandy, alas I fear I'm alone in my love of its scent!! Mine is in our bedroom, and when its got more than two or three umbels open, DH sleeps in the spare room... instead of me being driven out by his snoring... 8-)

Seems fair to me. Yes, if this one had more than two or three umbels open it would definitely be hanging outside. I'd have to think about where it could go if it blooms in the winter. I guess in the solarium where it would have to fight it out with the bugs. I got it from Jeanne (Brugcrazy). She has a huge one hanging in her bathroom. I think it gets lots of blooms. I don't know how she stands it. I'll have to ask her. I never thought about it until now that I know what it smells like.
