I am new to brugmansias and purchased one at HD. The plant had un-opened blooms but I did not notice a fragrance when they opened. I understand the scent is supposed to be stronger at night, but I could not smell a sweet fragrance. The plant was identified as Brugmanisas Arborea "Angel Trumpet" A reference on the internet stated:
"B. arborea flowers are known to be intensely fragrant and are the shortest of known brugmansia species. They are trumpet-shaped, ranging from 4.5 - 6.5" long"
Is this unusual to not have a scent? Does heat affect whether there is a scent of not? It is hot in Phoenix now.
Aren't Brugs Supposed to be Fragrant?
Not all brugs are fragrant kdkral especially some of the suaveolens hybrids and the sanguinea species.
And to make your situation even worse it is highly possible that you did not purchase a true arborea species. Many white suaveolens hybrids are wrongly id'd as arborea.
This is what an incorrectly id'd arborea looks like. It is really a suaveolens hybrid. Notice the green tube that holds the flower (called a calyx) is split many times. The flower tips are short.
Well doggone it! The calyx in the first pic is covered up by copyright ... lol! But honest there is 3-4 splits in that booger.
More information for my permanent brug file. Thank you Vee8ch for showing the true and the mislabeled - now all I have to learn is what does suaveolen and arborea mean, lol.
Tussee
Tussee if you mean by definition then
suaveolens = sweet smelling
arborea = tree
There is also a difference between the fake and real arborea leaves. Arborea leaves are real soft and downy. The fakes are just plain old brug leaves.

On the topic of scent... My CG just bloomed and it was my first. Now do they all smell kinda soapy kinda like Ivory soap? I thought for some reason they would smell more like a Datura. Its still a GOOD smell but not at all what I thought!

ooooh, if you want some 'HeavinScent' get yourself around Butterfly or Harlot. You won't even have to put your nose in a flower.... just be in the vicinity or downwind.
Gosh Caren .... It's kinda like asking 25 people to name the color of a brug. Is it pink or coral or peach or salmon or orange or orangy pinky peachie blah blah ... rofl!
There are different fragrances to my nose. So far I've detected lily, soap, baby powder, Lady Speed Stick "Light Musk" deodorant and Lemon Pledge. I don't remember which brugs smell like what.
To me Butterfly smells like baby power with a little spice, not over-powering at all.
I have Butterfly but no blooms yet. Harlot is on my want list but I don't have it yet. :o(
Caren
Butterfly is definitely in baby powder category... love it.
Harlot - OMG! I can't wait for the first of the season. powder and I think kool aid. She was an amazing show off last year.

Gee Blaine, your Harlot is hot. LOL. One I had but no longer. Gone are the days you can have them all I guess.
Oh Kdkral, Arborea is just fantastic as far as scent goes. To me it is the best fragrance in the world. I do not like too many of the brugs' fragrance, but Arborea I would miles to smell it. Thankfully I just have to go into my back yard! I believe you are too hot there for it but If you get one early on and grow it over winter inside it will bloom for you in early spring before it gets too hot. So at least you will have experienced true happiness for a short time. Arborea will bloom on little cuttings no problem.
