I can't believe I found an Epi this size! I've been buying 6 inch cuttings on E-bay. Would this be considered a ric rac? Of course there is no tag. (thats a yard stick)
L@@K what I just got!
I just noticed that it looks like you may have two different types in your pot? The other solid one looks like Epiphyllum oxypetalum. You may want to separate them.
I was wondering about the 2 different leaves? Maybe there are 2 intertwined?
wow what a great looking plant..but it does look like there are 2 there.. where did you luck in to such a find?
One of the nicer nurseries here in town it was $24.99 which I thought was pretty good :)
Lucky you..we don't have any nurseries around here that sell cacti or succulents really .... great buy!
Knees...I hate you on this forum, too.
Sigh.
PS did they have any more??????????????????????????????
Love, Sharon
Sharon...sweetheart...They had one more, even bigger. $30.95
Oh, well...guess I'll stick with what I have...lol...
S.
Fish, you will probably want to separate them as they have different growth habits, and they both get to be large/sprawling. I would remove the container and gently try to pull them apart. If the soil is loose as it should be, they should come apart fairly easily. New plants start easily from cuttings if you happen to break off a leaf or two separating them. You can also remove the container and rinse the soil off the root ball with a strong stream from the hose and then separate them. And then give them each their own container in well-draining soil.
Sounds good Clare. I seperate them tomorrow :)
Fishy...if you break anything off you don't want...you know who would give it tlc...lol...
=+)

...being greedy again...
Sharon, I'll have something for you tomorrow @ the garden mirror demo xoxoxoxo
Fishy...I'm not going... :0(
We're going up to our cabin near Flagstaff for a couple of days...
Save it for me???
No problemo :)
Hello, i was wondering if any of you have gotten a bloom on the fern-leaf cactus - mine is very small and far from blooming i'm afraid, but I sure would love to know the color (or even better, see a picture if anyone has a spare moment to snap!)
Thanks!
Abbie
No blooms, but it's happy :)
Did you guys know you can root them from just a "lobe" on the leaf? Not the entire leaf? I'm experimenting with that with mine now & got one rooted. Mine is hanging and sometimes when the leaves brush your head as you walk by, the lobes fall off, so I am sticking them in pots. One has rooted!!!!!!!!!!
I had one that was knocked off and I just stuck in a glass of water that I was rooting some yellow dots in, checked a week later and it had roots!
The lobe or the leaf?
Leaf :)
Luv the size of the leaves! Neat!!
:) Donna
Let me ask you a question. Mine has been in a hanging pot for years & I never re-potted it and it has slowed down tremendiously growing new leaves. Would re-potting help this plant? I believe it would. As insurance, I have taken a cutting or two. thanks. By the way, the best way to keep this plant is to put it ina gigantic hanging pot and hang it up & out of the way. I think it grows this way in the wild, with the leaves hanging down. Mine used to bloom but hasn't for the past couple years & so I think re-potting would help this, too.
They like to be root bound.
Oh, I wasn't going to put it in a larger pot, I was only going to change the potting soil. I haven't fertilized it. Maybe I need to be doing that? What do recommend for fertilizer?
Clare, you seem to be in a similar zone to me - is your fernleaf getting partial direct sun?! My house is like a forest right now because of my fear of burning Epi leaves (which I am beinging to think is irrational here in San Diego..)
Do you think these would be okay outside for me too? Yours look much healthier than mine...oh how I wish they would bloom!
Buttoneer, there are a few threads here about fertilizer. You might do a search to see if you can find them. Candy (Happenstance) gave very good fertilizing instructions here several times on long threads about their care. There are varying opinions about how much and when, and so you need to figure out what works best for you in your climate. I just fertilize them when I fertilize everything else. I usually use MiracleGro Bloombooster formula in the spring and then switch to regular MiracleGro, and I fertilize every other week from spring to fall.
Abbie, yours looks pretty great to me! Yes, mine are receiving some direct sun every day and do not burn, but they get plenty of water. They were in filtered sun, but got booted off the patio this spring for lack of room. I think yours would do fine in direct sun, provided they were acclimated and watered well.
This picture was taken about a year ago, after they were transplanted.
I bumped a couple of the ones I could find that talk about fertilizer. They should help. Actually, I needed a reminder, too.
