Raspberry?

Jacksonville, TX(Zone 8b)

Hey gang!

I would like to grow raspberries- do any of you have any experience with a certain variety that will take our heat and do really well?

Thanks much!!

I have a patch of wild dewberrys / juneberrys. Got them taking a century plant home form the Shiner area. Took a few years to grow. Don't get many berrys - the birds always get first choice.

I could try rooting some canes if you want to try them.

Trish, you probably have wild dewberries already growing on your property. I know here in Brazos County they seem to grow like weeds in any semi-wild areas. We know the berries are ripe when the bird droppings change color;)

Trish--
Try searching at the TAMU site:

If it can be grown in Texas, they probably got it there.

Thanks Bubba and AC- I do have juneberry plants growing wild......but I have my heart set on growing (and eating!) Raspberries.

Thanks Debbie- I'll check into it. Nothing like a personal recommendation, though :)

Butting in here :) Boy, do I ever love reading these Texas Forum threads - you guys are great folks !!

Trish and others who may be interested, I have a friend who lives just south of Dallas and after asking her, she tells me that the Dorman Red Vining Raspberry does very well for her. She created a bed for it that combines some sand in with her soil and also adds some composted material. It is sunny in the morning, but shaded in the afternoons.

I've not seen photos but she does tell me that they are good berries for eating - sure hope this helps. Hello again to all of you in Texas from a Maryland gal :)

Dea, I always love to see you post here. You are hereby an honorary Texan, lol!
